Back in LA after a long five days in Europe, followed by a day of getting settled back in, Ruby Lance is finally out and about in the streets of LA. Of course, Starbucks is the first stop so that she can caffeinate before going about whatever it is she's got planned for the day. She makes her way inside and up to the counter to order her drink and pay before moving along to wait for it. It's there that she glances over at another individual waiting for his coffee and she does a double-take.
"Cas? Oh my God! Cas!"
Her face lights up when she realizes that random patron is an all-too familiar face. She throws her arms around him in a tight hug, grinning from ear to ear.
"What are the odds of running into you here? I'm sorry! How are you doing? Still… still... busy?"
She asks the final question with some slight hesitation, referencing their texts from way earlier where he mentioned being busy. Though, her choice of the word busy seems more like it's just replacing something else she doesn't want to say.
”Umm… What ever happened to ‘hello’?”
He looks down at her with a raised eyebrow and half of a grin, unknowingly asking hundreds of questions with this befuddled look.
”Busy. Me. Yup! I’ve got my Hype debut to worry about. You know, gotta make a good.. No, better than good, great first impression! Against Genesis talent that is. If I want to be at the top, if I want to be a champion there, I’ve got to train like the top guys. Maybe even harder considering I’m fresh meat in these streets. The clock is ticking and I just don’t have time to have fun with you, Ruby. Umm, yeah… So it was nice seeing you, but I’ve got to go.”
Cas unhooks her grip around him and takes a sip of his coffee before attempting to make his way out of the establishment. Ruby is absolutely stunned into silence for a moment but his move towards the door prompts her into action and she jolts towards him, grabbing him by the arm.
"Cas! Wha… what do you mean? Of course I know you're trying to make a big impression. And… I mean, what's with the rush? I can walk over to the Performance Center with you. We don't have to have fun or whatever. We can train and… I mean, unless you don't wanna."
She falls silent with something of a sigh and shakes her head, shrugging her shoulders with a slightly lost expression. He turns about face and nudges her on the shoulder. Clearly seeing the disappointment painted on her face, he forces a smile on his face in hopes that it would make her feel better.
”I just think that I should work out alone. It doesn’t make much sense to work out with each other anymore. It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just that… listen you’re the champ. You’ve got the title, you’ve got the friends, you have a place here. I don’t and I’m unproven, if I want to be where you’re at, I need to do this by myself. I can’t be a champion by riding the current champ’s coat tails. How am I going to get better than anyone, better than you, if I’m working with you?”
Ruby nods, slowly. She gets it, she wishes she didn't, but she gets it. She takes a deep breath and looks down, suddenly feeling all kinds of uncomfortable in the presence of her own best friend.
"Right. Okay. Yeah. I get it. Totally. Um, maybe… I don't know, maybe I'll just text you later then. Good luck and stuff. With the training. And the match. You know, if I don't see you before it."
”I’m sure you we’ll see each other backstage. We’re like magnets! Not pressed together the opposite way, obviously. Right? Am I saying that right? YEAH because when they’re pressed together the opposite way they don’t come together, so we’d be like magnets that DO come together. One way or another. Or maybe you’re like a quarter and I’m the magnet… Hmm, I dunno, we’re like something though!”
"Yeah. We're something."
She looks back up at him and manages to put on a smile as she nods a couple more times. Oh! She has coffee. That's a good reason to turn around and get it. Cas turns back around and starts to make his way out of the starbucks, this time successfully going outside. Ruby collects her coffee and turns about around with that forced smile on her face… that goes away when she realizes that Cas has skipped out behind her back.
"So… yeah…"
She sighs and starts to dwell in the moment before she gets brave and hurries out the door. Moving as fast as her shorter legs can take her to catch up with the normal sized steps from a man like Cas, she catches up to him with some effort.
"Uh… so…"
Good plan. Catch up to him. Probably should have come up with something to say, too.
”Ruby! Hey… what the heck? Did you like Usain Bolt it over here? Nah, I was probably just walking super slow without realizing it.”
He could tell that she ran over here, the sound of tiny feet in rapid succession kinda gave it up. Slowing up with her, he turns his head to look over his shoulder at her and smiles as brightly as he possibly can, this time, not forced at all.
"No, I ran. You know, because I'm so short and you're so tall. Tallest person I know, I think. Like a giant. Super big."
”Regular height for your information!”
She grins over at him, hers totally not forced anymore either as she pokes fun at him being taller than her.
”Where are you headed to anyway? The performance center?”
"Yeah. I've been lazy all week long. I have to get back into ring shape."
”What do you mean? You’re in great shape! Training never hurt though. Except when people get injured while they train. In that case, training did hurt!”
She giggles and shakes her head at classic Cas.
"Look, we can just walk there together. And when we get there, I'll get out of your way. Let you do your thing, I'll do my thing. And maybe after we can walk back together or something. If that's cool."
”You live in the opposite direction as me. That would just be dumb of me to walk you ALL the way home. As for the performance center, I’m being serious. I want to work on myself alone.”
"Yeah, I know. And I'm going to let you. And as for the whole walking home thing… maybe I can walk you ALL the way home and be the dumb one to walk back to my place."
She looks over at him with a wide grin. He doesn’t seem to reciprocate the same reaction, shaking his head at her suggestion.
”Maybe we just don’t? It just doesn’t seem like the good choice and it’s kind of a nuisance going out of your way like that if you think about it. Since when was I the one making the smart decisions?”
"Picking me for a friend was kind of smart."
She laughs at her own joke but it doesn't last before she shakes her head.
"Okay, maybe not. But hey, you're not a nuisance. Spending time with you isn't a nuisance. I don't think spending time with your friends is ever a nuisance. Unless it is and then maybe you don't really like that person."
She stays quiet for no more than a moment before shrugging.
"And maybe you should tell that person."
He quickly avoids even talking about that subject and stops in his tracks.
”Hey, so you face those creepy dudes at Hype, right?
She nods her head and looks down at her shoes as they walk and talk.
"Yeah. With Austen and Danni as my partners. But, I guess, at least I have partners."
”Yeah, you could be facing two people who just might be as hungry as you by yourself!”
"Yeah, but you're pretty awesome so I wouldn't worry too much."
”Same goes to you! If only you realized just how naturally talented you are, you’d instantly be one of the greatest wrestlers and would be immediately called up. It took me six years to get even a little close to what you just have genetically.”
She shrugs her shoulders.
"I'm happy where I am and who's around me."
Looking at Cas specifically when she says that, Ruby smiles just a little before they reach the Performance Center.
"Alright. Well, good luck with your workout. Um, I'm just gonna be a couple hours or so. I wasn't just making a joke about being dumb. I'm all for it if you want the company. If not, I understand too. So yeah."
”Good luck on your workout too, Ruby.”
He scratches at his beard and turns to her. She smiles and touches his arm lightly, giving him a little pat before moving along. She gets a couple steps away from him before she stops and turns back around. She walks back over to him and puts her hands on her hips.
"I changed my mind."
”Huh?”
"I'm not going to let you do this alone."
She holds her hands up immediately to stop him from interjecting in any shape or form, which is a tough task given how talkative Cas can be.
"I know you want to be a one-man champion or whatever, but this whole thing with me didn't happen because of genetically superior or whatever. It happened because a lot of people helped me along the way. A lot of people were friends to me and dammit I'm your friend whether you want it or not. And if you want to start making smart decisions then the first one should be to listen to me, the girl who already is champion, on how to get you where you want to be."
”I already told you before, Ruby. I’m not doing this with you, we’re not gonna be doing this together. You’re my friend and I appreciate that you want to help me, but what I want for my career doesn’t involve being trained by you. I want to beat you. I want to be where you are and helping you isn’t going to be helping myself. It would be actually doing the opposite of what I want. It’s not about us being friends because we’re always going to be friends, but I’m not looking to do this with you.
The usually calm and collected demeanor of Caspian has gone out of the window. Scratching the back of his neck out of irritation, he looks at Ruby with a blank stare before looking up at the sky in an attempt to not make eye contact with her.
”Let’s just talk about this stuff when we head to your place. Even though I KNOW I’m going to be super exhausted! ugh.”
Not usual calm and collected Cas and even a little more stressed out than he should be, still manages to put a smile on Ruby's face as she listens to what he has to say about them leaving the Performance Center together.
"Hey. I'm the dummy taking you home. And I'll spring for an uber."
”Nah. I’ll take you home. Plus, you’re broke as heck. I got it.”
"Hey! I'm not that broke anymore. Yes you are! Champion paycheck and splitting rent. I've got a little saved."
”Knowing you, you probably don’t.”
She looks more than a little guilty as she tries to deny it.
"Assassin's Creed is coming out next month and I had to preorder the Deluxe edition."
”I can’t wait for that glitchfest! Always. Every year. Glitch central. Unfinished games!”
Ruby laughs, but she can't really argue it.
"Hey! They took a year off so they could do better this year… supposedly."
”Well you’re gonna have to bring it over so that I can play that myself because I will NOT be spending money on that game!”
"Alright. I'm gonna bring it over and you are so going to regret not buying it. God, I hope."
She laughs and shakes her head, cringing slightly at the fear that she is so going to be completely wrong about this.
”I hope so too! That’s like four really far uber rides! Twenty five dollar footlongs! A really expensive cheeseburger, hmm i wonder what a hundred dollar burger tastes like. Probably like regret.”
"Absolutely 100% like regret."
She smiles up at Cas, far more relaxed than she was this entire walk over now that their conversation has become more casual and what they usually talk about.
"You know, we could be having this same conversation while warming up on a treadmill or something. Ruby… Doesn't mean we're training together. That’s probably the definition of training together!”
She shakes her head and gives an over-exaggerated sigh.
"No. That's the definition of warming up together. Ugh! I'm not going to follow you over to the weights or whatever. I mean, I'm totally going to watch but I won't follow you over there. Promise."
She makes a show of crossing her heart and holds a hand up, complete with an innocent grin.
”You’re not going to let this go, are you?”
Ruby can only shrug and continue to smile.
"I mean, we're both here. And we're both here for the same thing. What's a little support going to hurt? Besides, you can look at it as scouting me or whatever. I'm okay with that."
”I’m not a NCAA coach, Ruby. Watching you work out isn’t going to help me figure out how you wrestle.”
Fair enough. Ruby can only nod and shrug about that one.
”You’re facing much bigger opponents than you, correct? So you know how to beat ‘em! Use that speed. Think of it this way, they’re Dr. Eggman… No there’s 3 of them, right? Okay! They’re EggMEN and they’ve got all these huge machines and gadgets and stuff. Who are you you ask? You’re sonic! You’ve gotta beat ‘em with your super fast feet! Unless you want to be tails and fly up out of there!”
"Oh, I loved Tails! But Sonic is my dude. Definitely Sonic. Unless it's the Labyrinth level. Which one was that again? You know, the one with the water filling up? I LOVED THAT ONE! Ugh! I hated that level. Girl you crazy! I don't think I ever beat it once. I don't think anybody has ever!"
She shakes her head in amazement of how difficult that level was. Then she realizes that's not the point.
"I mean, I'm just going to move quick and do what I do and hope that my friends have my back out there. Because I'm going to have theirs for sure. I just wish I could be out there for you, you know? You've got two people to face. One of them is… I don't think she's legal. Are you allowed to hit her? Wow. That's scary to think about."
Ruby taps her chin as she wonders about Izzy's age. She's fairly certain she's only 17.
"And the other guy! This is his first match, isn't it? Second? First? He looks fast, though. Probably faster than me. Maybe even faster than Sonic!"
”Let’s get something straight. NO ONE is faster than Sonic! Flash? Barry Allen is a beast! Anyway! Izzy might be underaged, I don’t know for sure, but I think that she’s a fantastic wrestler for her age, whatever it is. Azul seems like the wrestler that MIGHT cause the most trouble though just based on his mystique alone. He’s really fast and he can hit super hard! You would never expect someone that size to have the strength that he does. It’s unreal! Plus, Lan represents him… so he’s gotta be good!”
"Yeah. Lan represents some really great people."
She looks up at Cas with a smile. He reciprocates that smile with one of his own.
"Maybe it'll come down to the two Lan boys and we'll see which one is the better of the two? I mean, if you were looking to figure that out. Not that you needed the added pressure of that or anything. I'm sure Lan isn't looking to put his clients into competition with one another."
”Or maybe they’ll jump the tallest one in the ring aka me. That’s what I’m worried about! A two on one onslaught.
Ruby looks concerned. Really really concerned as she considers that. She shakes her head and breathes out a heavy breath.
"Yeah… you are SO tall."
”NORMAL HEIGHT!”
She giggles, getting far too much enjoyment over the fact that they have very different perspectives on his height. Get it? Cause she looks up at him and he probably looks up at other people. Still funny.
"Okay, okay. How about… we go do our thing and meet here in a couple hours? Or earlier? Maybe take a little break in an hour? We can take breaks together, right?"
”How about you do your thing and I do mine? I’m being serious, Ruby.”
"That's what I said, silly. And we can take breaks together. And meet after."
”You can take your breaks, short one. I’m gonna do my thing and if you’re not done when I’m done, then I’ll sit back and wait for you.”
Ruby takes a step back and nods her head.
"Oh. It's gonna be like that, huh? Okay. No breaks. We'll see who taps out first. I wasn’t making it a competition."
She grins, knowing that he wasn't even trying to challenge her… or was he?
”You know what? You’re on! Just don’t hurt yourself. I don’t want to be responsible for the injuring of our South Bay champ.
"But if you do, you have to take care of me. And carry me home. It shouldn't be a problem for you, though. Because you're so big and strong."
He hangs his head and nearly topples over laughing at her silly compliments.
"You're such a silly head. I love ya, you fool."
Giggling at his over-reaction, she playfully smacks his arm and takes off to start her work-out. Cas looks over at her and shakes his head, smiling at her goofiness.
