Today
Jonathan walks into the apartment and closes the door. He sets his bag down and pauses. The silence of the place echo louder than anything. He frowns a moment as he Remembers Ruby is again out of town on her Championship tour. He smiles thinking of her and how proud he is of his friend in all she has accomplished. He thinks back to when he first met her and talking about what it is she wants.
“To be a superstar and champion.” Was her response, well at least paraphrased response. He knew she had accomplished these things already in her short career. Jonathan knew she had a long career of superstardom ahead of her. “It’s going to last as long as you want it to Ruby.” He says quietly to himself.
He moved quickly to his room to set his bag down and change from the long run and checked his twitter feed. He knew it was silly but he had made some great friends through it as well as through Redemption so he wanted to see what was going on. He laughed as the topic of Cinnamon came up and he was reminded of a Cinnamon Roll cheesecake recipe he had. He knew what he was going to do today to pass the time. He sent a few messages and got to work.
An hour later his masterpiece was cooling and he got ready to package a dozen to a new friend out east. He wrote out a small note and included the recipe and boxed everything up and planned to overnight the package to her later that day. He smiles and gets ready to head out. He isn’t sure where he is going but he knows he isn’t sitting around the apartment tonight. He must get his head right for his upcoming match on glory. Too much bull shit has infiltrated his psyche and he has let it distract him from his focus.
He sits down and checks messages again and decides. He checks his accounts and sees his investments have made a good run the last couple weeks and he books a flight to NY and then a flight from NY To Louisville for his Sunday match. Closing his eyes Jonathan thinks back to the last time he shared the ring with Josh Kennedy. He feels the pain in his back as he remembers what happened afterwards. Shaking his head, he stands and goes to pack for his trip.
Yesterday (Technically years ago, but you get the idea)
Jonathan woke up to the sound of a ringing in his head. It took him a moment to realize that it wasn’t his imagination or a dream but the honest to goodness fire alarm going off. His dormmate was already up and out the door. “So much for friendship. Ass hole didn’t even wake me up.” Struggling to find his feet Jonathan was more pissed that he had drank that last shot then the fact someone had set the fire alarm off.
Groggily he made his way to the hallway and it was now his senses started to clear and the smell of ash drifted his way. “Shit.” He said. “It’s a real fire. God damn hotplates who burnt their macaroni” Jonathan heard something crash and he made his way down the hall his sense still slow from the alcohol. “What’s the college experience if not getting drunk and almost dying” he joked to himself trying to clear his head.
He was on the second floor so he knew he had a way to go. He heard a muffled scream from behind him and he turned to see one that the fire was spreading and this was no joke and two a door jammed by some furniture that was pushed to far. Either someone was playing a joke or he missed the mad dash. It was then he noticed realized who was stuck. This kid named Darren who was the biggest ass on the floor. He was mean to everyone even went so far as to hit Jonathan a few weeks ago over what amounted to not much. The quiet type Jonathan thought.
As Jonathan made his way over he realized that while the fire was a real danger it hadn’t grown as fast as you would think and he heard the fire trucks outside. Looking at Darren predicament it was easy to see this was someone practical joke at the most inopportune time. “Hey Darren hang on I got this. Give me one second.” Jonathan yells at the door as he begins to slide the heavy furniture back givining room to the door. “Try now” The door flys open enough for Darren to squeeze out. He gives Jonathan a scowl and turns and runs towards the stair case and the exit.
“Well Your Welcome” Jonathan responds as he makes his own way to the stairs and safety. Once outside he finds his roommate who confesses he tried to wake him up but in his words. “Dude you were so far gone” Jonathan was in better spirits after finding his friends. He looked across the quad and saw Darren standing alone. He smiled glad he was safe even though they had their problems he wasn’t going to not try to help.
