Note: The following took place just before the semifinals of the Super Falcon Cup
Julianna DiMaria is walking down the hallway in a building in Mexico as she mentally prepares for the semifinals of the Super Falcon Cup tournament. As she nears the studio, some thoughts run through her head as she starts to become sentimental about the journey so far that she has faced in Mexico.
Julianna (thinking): I will never forget when I was selected by West Coast Genesis to be part of the Super Falcon Cup tournament and I was also the first choice at that. I hadn’t even had my first mainstream match yet and I was already being offered the spot. I couldn’t believe it and my parents couldn’t either…
Julianna pauses her thoughts as she reflects on the moment that she and her parents found out that she was going to be part of the tournament.
FLASHBACK
Date: February 2017
Julianna: I don’t know what to make of this…
Julianna sat down in the living room with her parents after she had read a letter to them from WCG telling her that they had selected her to represent them in the Super Falcon Cup. Both of her parents are bewildered and in shock as well.
Mr. DiMaria: You’re already going places and ya haven’t even started yet.
Mrs. DiMaria: I assume that WCG must have so much faith in you if they are going to select you to be part of this.
Julianna: I know, right? I suppose it’s a testament to my natural, dynastic abilities that I got chosen when they could have selected any run of the mill, dime a dozen, flash in the pan to represent them instead of me, but I think they know what they are doing. It appears that I made the right decision to join them because hey, maybe they’re doing whatever they can to help be grow into the superstar I am destined to be, right?
Mrs. DiMaria: Yeah…
Her mother says this with a bit of a concerned tone in her voice.
Mr. DiMaria: Let’s just go with that. But damn, what an honor.
Mrs. DiMaria: They’re putting a lot of faith and pressure in you already and they haven’t even had their first show yet.
Julianna smiles and smirks at this, clearly not intimidated by the spotlight being in such a tournament is going to give her.
Julianna: You say it’s pressure, I say bring it on. I’m going to call the offices back right now and tell them that I accept their spot and GOL’s invitation on their behalf to be part of the tournament.
Julianna excitedly reaches for her phone, but her parents aren’t quite ready to let her make that phone call just yet.
Mrs. DiMaria: Now, hold on just a second there, Julianna.
Julianna sighs, clearly annoyed that she was interrupted by her mother.
Mr. DiMaria: You don’t want to at least think about it this before you actually go through with it?
Julianna: What’s there to think about?
Mr. DiMaria: First off, you’re going to Mexico for this.
Julianna: AND?
Mr. DiMaria: It can be dangerous down there. I know this because when I was still wrestling in the Indies before you were born, I made a couple of trips south of the border and it was no picnic. They take their wrestling seriously down there and you can bet all that you’re worth that they’re going to be a rough crowd for you. They are not going to just hand you respect just because you’re down there wrestling. You’ve got to earn respect in a traditional wrestling country like that.
Mrs. DiMaria: Plus, not to mention a lot of the crime that tends to happen down there. You could get really hurt. That is, if these veteran wrestlers from these other promotions don’t want to hurt you first.
Julianna rolls her eyes in annoyance, clearly not taking the concerns of her parents seriously at all.
Julianna: Look you guys, this is MY career…
Mrs. DiMaria: But we’re YOUR parents and we’re just telling it like it is. You don’t think maybe a veteran wrestler is going to go stiff on you just to break you in? There are people in this business that have a reputation for doing such things to a rookie wrestler like yourself.
Mr. DiMaria: We’re just trying to make sure that you don’t get seriously hurt that’s all. And another thing, you don’t know who is signing up for this. You don’t know which wrestling promotions these people are going to come from. You don’t know if you’re going to get someone who’s a 10 time world champion across 10 years of being involved in this game or if you’re going to get someone that’s just as inexperienced as you are.
Julianna: I know the risks, okay? Seriously. Let me do this!
Mrs. DiMaria: Do you realize that you’re not likely to even get by the first round?
Julianna: Oh so now you don’t believe in me? Is that what you’re saying?
Mr. DiMaria: It’s not that, sweetheart. We just think there’s more risk than reward. We don’t want your confidence to get ruined.
Julianna: Look, I appreciate the concern, okay? But still, I have absolutely nothing to lose! If I end up losing in the first round, then fine. That’s what everyone would realistically expect me to do anyway, right? If I win in the first round, JUST the first round, then that would help me. I’m taking this one match at a time. Of course, I would like to go out and win the whole thing against anyone that I may come across from any wrestling company, but I need this, you guys. I need to know the faces and the places around the world that I am going to compete against because I plan on being the very best my generation has to offer and I need to know exactly what the domain is like out there. I want to challenge myself with this tournament and you two are going to deny me that? I thought I knew you both better than that.
Julianna sighs after her passionate rant toward her parents and a slight pout appears on her face. Her parents look at each other and think about some of the words that Julianna just said. The young 22 year old San Diego native shows further despondence toward her parents by folding her arms and starting a dagger of disappointment through her parents’ souls. Her mother is the first to pick up on this and she appears to express a look of doubt, second guessing whether or not she was in the right to try and convince Julianna to not go through with the tournament.
Mr. DiMaria: Well, when ya put it like THAT, maybe you make a point. We’re not trying to hold you back. Our main concern was whether this was something too soon for ya. I gotta ask. What’s your realistic goal for this?
Julianna: Realistically? I’d just like to get by round one. Anything more than that is a bonus.
Mrs. DiMaria: At least you’re smart enough not to set your own expectations too high. That’s very good on you.
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah, we’re proud of the fact that we’ve been raising ya right. I’ll tell ya what. You make that phone call to the WCG offices and tell them that you accept their offer. You go do this tournament and do the very best that you can in it. We’re not going to pressure you into winning the whole thing. The experience is going to be invaluable no matter what.
Mrs. DiMaria: I concur with your father. We’re sorry we weren’t seeing it from the right light.
Julianna puts her hands down on her lap and she takes a deep, relaxing breath.
Julianna: Thank you guys! Seriously. It really means so much to me that you’re supporting me with this even with all the risks that you’ve mentioned.
Mr. DiMaria: The sky’s the limit for ya, Jules. Why would we want to ruin that for ya in our right minds?
Mrs. DiMaria: We will always support you no matter what, okay? Good luck down there and be careful.
Julianna: I will guys, thanks.
Julianna would then call the WCG offices to make it official and this would be the moment that Julianna would officially be involved with the Super Falcon Cup tournament. She definitely had a journey ahead of her, no question about it.
