FADE IN:
EXT. HERMOSA BEACH – DAY
The glint of the moonlight bounces off the ocean accompanied by the soft “whoosh” of waves crashing to shore on Hermosa Beach. The camera tracks along the shoreline before coming to a stop where CJ Lorson is stood looking out into the water. He’s got his hands in his pockets and his lightly digging his toes into the sand. He turns toward the camera, a slight sullen look on his face. He pulls one hand out of his pocket and holds up two fingers close together as if measuring something.
“This close…”
He shakes his hand, his fingers still close together as before emphasizing how close. How close to what, exactly? Well…I’m not sure yet. I’m sure we’ll find out, though.
“I came this close to getting the win in my very first match in West Coast Genesis. But you know what?”
CJ shrugs his shoulders, his head tilted slightly and a “oh well” expression on his face.
“That’s just the way it goes. You win some you lose some. I said from the very beginning, my main goal was to go out to that ring and entertain the fans watching in the arena. Win, lose, or draw, I was going to go out there and make sure the fans had something memorable, and I did that. We did that. All three of us in that ring did just that and no matter what, I’m proud to have been in that match despite the loss.”
CJ nods his head, an assured look on his face further emphasizing the fact that he’s proud of the match that he, TD, and Keiji were involved in at WCG Hype 4.
“But that was then, and this is now. And now I have a new challenge ahead of me…one that’s two-fold, in fact. Because not only do I have an equally tough opponent to look forward to facing, but I have to try my damnedest to finally walk away with a ‘W’ on my record in WCG.”
CJ winces at the thought of the odds against him at WCG: Rise. He shakes his head a bit, looking down at the sand beneath him as if mulling everything over.
“Tasmin Richards, you and I seem to have quite a bit in common. I mean, we’re both going into this match with a loss looming over us. And as you said yourself, we’ve both got a lot to live up to; you with your family…me with mine. And on top of that, we both have people who believe being ‘nice’ in this business is impossible. As if it’s some sort of a flaw in the business of professional wrestling.”
CJ shakes his head almost dismissively, a look of incredulity sliding onto his face for a fleeting second before fading away.
“But I know that you and I; we both know better. After what I saw from you in the ring at WCG Hype 4, I know you and I both share the philosophy that it’s ‘competitiveness’ that gets the job done.”
CJ pumps his fist when he says the word “competitiveness.” He glances down as if choosing his next words carefully.
“Because it would be easy to walk around being a total asshat to everybody around you. It’d be easy to talk trash to your opponent…tell them they’re not worthy of standing in the ring against you, that they don’t have what it takes to win. It’d be easy to say nobody matches up against you like you’re a king or a queen among the paupers. But then when it’s time to put up or shut up, it’s always those people who talk big and look past their opponents…they’re the ones who get shut down the fastest.”
He snaps his fingers as if demonstrating how quickly people like that get shut down. He nods his head for added emphasis.
“So, trust me, Tasmin, when I tell you…I’m not one of those people. I would never think to walk around here acting like every single one of my opponents is going to be a pushover; like my loss at Hype 4 was nothing more than a fluke. I’d never think to insult you so much as to say stepping into that ring with you is going to be nothing more than a warm up match. That’s not me; that’s not my style. I’ve seen what everybody in WCG is capable of; man, woman, young…not so young. I’ve been watching and studying, and you are among the many who impress me.”
CJ nods his head approvingly.
“I’m looking forward to this match, Tasmin. And not just because I need a win to finally prove myself in WCG, not because I plan to use it as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. If those things come my way because of this match, great. If not…oh well, thems the breaks. I’m not looking forward to this match for any of those things. I’m looking forward to this match because I know you’re going to give me everything you’ve got; you’re going to make this match every bit as competitive as I plan to. I know you’re going to make me work for that victory, and I hope you do, Tasmin, because I’m going to do the same. Like I said; we both have a lot to prove here. See you at WCG: Rise.”
CJ gives a bit of a nod, a smile winding its way across his face. Not one that is menacing or cocky in any way, but rather a genuine, almost eager smile. He turns on his heels and heads down the shoreline of the beach and out of the frame of the camera. All that’s left in our view is the ocean waves crashing toward us and falling back. The soft “whoosh” is all that we’re left with along with the stars twinkling in the night sky as we…
