We are backstage at one of the West Coast Genesis road shows where the South Bay Champion Ruby Rose is pacing nervously near the gorilla position. Her match was coming up soon and she was doing a mental checklist of all the things she needed to keep in mind while competing tonight. I'm sure number one is not to get injured and risk ruining two matches at Crossroad: Rise but that's beside the point. She's interrupted from this mental checklist when she spots "The True Heart" Austen Blackwell in the distance.
"Hey Austen!"
She jogs down the hall towards him, a bright smile on her face as she approaches her friend that also happens to be the number one contender for the very championship she's wearing around her waist.
"Hey! Uh… how's it going?"
As if suddenly forgetting the reason she rushed over to him, or perhaps forgoing said reason, Ruby fumbles for a moment to come up with an alternative.
“Hey you. Just getting ready for tonight’s show. Gotta be ready for this whole title match thing that is coming up, you know?”
He smiled, but there was something obviously on his mind as he was not his normal cheery self. She smiles back and nods along with what he has to say. A moment of awkward silence follows while Ruby looks down at the title that was wrapped around her waist. The title he was referring to wanting to be ready to take from her.
"Yeah. It's gonna be… it'll be great, I'm sure."
She gives it her best effort to sound like she thinks it really will be great, even though there's obvious concern from her standpoint on whether or not it'll be a good night for her.
"So, I was… well, I was just wondering… how's the house-hunting going? You and Mercedes are looking for houses, right? I thought I read that on Twitter."
Once more, Ruby fumbles for a moment to keep the conversation going in a direction that doesn't seem like the original direction it was supposed to go.
“Yeah. We actually just found a place, I put in a bid, and it is ours. I may have use my parent’s name to help close the deal. It’s the least they could do for me right now...”
He mumbled off the end of the sentence. Ruby takes in a breath, holds it for a moment while watching the way Austen's mood deflates with that statement, and she slowly lets it out.
"About that… I don't mean to pry. It's certainly none of my business, but there are rumors going around and… uh, well, I wanted to come to you directly about it because it's not really anybody else's business. But if there's something going on with you and your parents and… again, none of my business. I just want you to know that I'm here for you if you need someone to talk to or whatever. I know we're not exactly the best of friends, more than that we're opponents coming up but… well, you know."
Ramble ramble ramble. She realizes she's doing that far too late, managing to wrap the whole thing up with a friendly smile. Austen is taken back, but his first reaction, as most are, is not the best.
“Who said anything about me? Who is spreading rumors?”
He was obviously a little miffed. Ruby's eyes widen as she goes into panic mode.
"What? No one. That's not what I meant. It wasn't spreading rumors, just… it's just hearsay, Austen. You know how things go. People are worried about you. That's all. I'm sorry if I upset you."
He takes a minute, and breathes. And then he smiles.
“Sorry. It’s just.. Touchy. I’ve discovered that some things are not as they seem. And well… my dad is not the man I thought he was. I just… thank you Ruby. It is good knowing that you are there. It means a lot to me. And to Mercedes.”
He looks around.
“She is around her somewhere. Probably scoping out whatever sweet treats they have. She has this knack for finding the more obscure snacks.”
He laughed as he was getting off track, but Ruby laughs along with him.
“It means alot. So thank you.”
He reached out to hug her. She hugs him back and looks a lot more at ease now that it's clear she didn't upset him.
"I'm glad you have her to be there for everything. You deserve to be completely happy and I see that even if some things in our personal lives aren't as perfect as we want them to be, she makes you happy and that's what's most important."
She glances back towards the gorilla position and takes a deep breath.
"I think I'm up. I'll talk to you later. Have a good match tonight."
He nods and waves as Mercedes walks up behind him wrapping her arms around him.
“Hey you!”
He turns back towards her.
“Ruby and I were just doing a little shit talking.”
He did not want to worry Mercedes as the two of them headed back to their locker room.
"Hey Austen!"
