Honey: What's happening?
Honey whispers as she walks forward, not daring to look back behind her.
She sees the three men pull metal from their waistbands as Alechs and Honey quickly duck inside. He gets her behind a wall as a screech is heard and a series of loud pops.
Honeys heart races fast as she covers her ears up with the long sleeves of her hoodie.
He wraps his arms around her as he was used to it from growing up there. After a few seconds, they ends.
Alechs: You okay babe?
Honey clings to Alechs and has her breathing fast and rapid.
Honey: What was that??
Alechs did not want to sugar coat things.
Alechs: It was a drive by. It is what I had to deal with everyday living here.
Honey didn't know what that was but knew it wasn't like a drive thru and hugs Alechs very tightly for security as well as compassion.
She didn't say much.
Alechs: You know what a drive by is? They were shooting at us.
Honey: But I didn't do like anything to them.
Alechs: Yeah? that is called life, here.
He loosens his grip up.
Alechs: Ready to go up and see the old apartment?
Honey: We need to check on your friends!
Honey couldn't understand why he wouldn't want to check on his friends at all and brushed over the clear attack.
Alechs: Those vatos might be circling back to shoot more. You really wanna go out there? I'm sure my boys smoked 'em.
He knew realism was hitting her.
Honey: I don't understand your, like, words. Let's go to see the apartment.
Honey says tightening the draw strings again to conceal herself by the grey material of the hood.
He smiles and shakes his head. They head into the elevator to take the slow ride up. As they ride, the lights flicker on and off. On the 7th floor, the doors open and a well dressed man steps in with a young female wearing very revealing clothing.
Honey doesn't say anything, worried they might be doing an inside drive by and clings close to Alechs.
Man: You two looking for a little action?
He smiles at Honey, three gold teeth showing.
Honey had never seen golden teeth before except on one type she'd seen in television. She whispers
Honey: Pirate.
They get off two floors later.
Alechs: That was not a pirate. Pirates aren't real Honey. That was a pimp. And his girl.
Honey: What's a pimp? His girlfriend was dressed very, um, like, showy too.
Alechs: Dudes pay her for sex. And he is like her sex manager. He gets a cut of the money and protects her. Usually with a gun.
Honey: Oh, she's like a pretty woman?
Honey says quoting the julia roberts movie.
Honey: Um, did you pay for it sometimes?
Honey shows her little distrust with Alechs.
Alechs laughs.
Alechs: Pretty woman is fake. She does WAY nastier things in real life. And no, I never paid for it.
the elevator opens on his floor, the 32nd.
Honey: What nasty stuff?
Honey waits for Alechs to get out, staying behind him always as comfort.
Alechs: You really wanna know?
They step into the hall as there is a man hunched over, throwing up in the hall.
Honey: Ewww.
Honey says seeing the sick and puts her fist to her mouth to hold back her own heaving.
They walk in the opposite direction.
Alechs: He's piss drunk. Probably needing some more Meth.
Honey: Is there any, like, normal people?
Alechs steps back.
Alechs: What do you mean normal people? You mean white people?
Honey: No, like, people who aren't, like, being sick and, um, doing sex stuff for money. Like me and you.
Alechs: You wanted to see where I grew up, right? This is it. People do everything they can everyday to survive.
Honey: We need to, like, raise some awareness about it! Like maybe get people to help improve the area for people.
Honey says trying to be positive and find a way to make it right.
he laughs.
Alechs: This is government housing. No one cares about us. People die out there everyday. People OD. People sell drugs and turn tricks. You gotta do what you gotta do.
Honey: I'm glad you live with me now. This is, um, very sad and, like, it's not a good environment to live in. At all
Honey says not understanding how Alechs can laugh about it.
He steps back.
Alechs: Wait.. I live with you?
Honey: We live together. You live with me and I live with you in the casa de cubbies. It doesn't have this unsafe stuff happening. Aren't you happier being there than, um, here?
Honey gestures to the building and all she's seen.
Alechs: We live together. You make it seem like if I didn't move into that house, I would have nowhere to stay.
He was offended like he was a pity case.
Honey: No, you have your house with Rodrigo and stuff. I'm just trying to say that I am glad you moved away from this stuff.
Alechs: That is not my house either.
Alechs was feeling upset like he needs other people, and he would never want to rely on people.
Honey: I know, you moved away. But you used to and I'm happy that you are in a safer place and your family is too. I just feel bad for everyone else here.
Alechs: This is how a lot of people live, Honey. Follow me.
They head down the hallway as it reeked of smells.
He opens the door into an apartment as there was one big open room, with a curtain hung from the ceiling to make a makeshift bedroom to the side. The sink dripped. The windows were nailed shut. The floor was years old and stained. The paint was peeling.
Alechs: This is home.
Honey: This is how you lived?
Honey never had a bedroom like this ever. She looks around and turns around to hug him tightly.
Alechs wraps his arm around her. He pulled the curtain back and showed her a single mattress that was broken down, stained, and obviously handed down from kid to kid.
Alechs: That's my bed.
Honey: That's not a bed, you poor poor chico, like, it isn't fair at all.
It was setting in how the other side lived.
Alechs: I had to rely on myself. Myself to cook. To make money. Always. I worked from here, to where I am now. You see why I do not need to rely on other people? I made myself better. And no one helped me.
Honey: But we're a team Alechs. We're supposed to lean on each other and stuff.
She says looking up at him with her hood concealed face.
Honey: You're not alone anymore.
Alechs: I know. I have you. And you have me. But I cannot rely on other people Not your dad. Not Devlin, Trixie, or Lexie. Not on my ma, or my bro. Not even my uncle. It is you.
He points to her.
Alechs: And me.
Honey: And nobody else?
Honey started to wonder if this meant he wanted her to cut ties with everyone.
He takes her hand and has a moment of true clarity.
Alechs: If you want to by my wife, we need to learn to count on each other. To go to each other if there is an issue. To solve things ourselves. I started here, Honey. Right here.
He points to the terrible mattress.
Alechs: And look at me now? Imagine what we could do. Together. Us, baby.
He looks into her eyes.
Honey: OK. I will try to be more independent and stuff.
Honey smiles and takes a look around.
Honey: So. Um, where was your favourite place to go here?
Honey looks to see if he had a happy place. A diamond in the rough and wished to see it.
Alechs: Not really. Wrestling was my escape.
He opens up to her.
Honey says holding both his hands and finally takes off her hood, showing her blonde curly locks as she feels very safe and close to Alechs.
Alechs: I wanted to show you that life can be terrible. It can be bad. Evil does exist. But that if we work together. As a couple. We can do better.
Honey: And be happier too Alechs.
Honey thinly suggests that she suspects sometimes Alechs won't let himself be happy.
Honey whispers as she walks forward, not daring to look back behind her.
