Announcer: “So, with the Francis Lewis Patriots down by 10, “Slingin’” Jack Santore looks to lead his team back with only 2 minutes remaining here in the fourth quarter. The Patriots have excellent field position here and have relied heavily on Jack’s arm. That Cowboy run defense has not allowed a rushing touchdown all season long.”
The scene fades into a 17 year-old Jack Santore putting his football helmet on as he gets set to take the field with his team down by 10 points. He looks calm and ready by the looks of him. However on the inside he’s a ball of nerves. His parents are in the stands as are the college scouts from his college of choice, Alabama. Oh, and not to mention the hundreds of students and their families in attendance.
There’s a quiet tension in the hometown crowd, hopeful to make the playoffs, while the opposing fans hope that the kid that’s been a miracle on the football field will be all out of them tonight. Jack’s coach goes over some last minute tips but assures him that he’s got the game won and just to do what he’s been doing and they’ll win the game. His coach pats him on the back as he takes the field to a course of cheers from his hometown fans.
Jack: ”Okay boys, we’re goin’ deep here. I’m pretty sure Joey can beat the safety. He’s been burnin’ him all night. We’re going double fade, nothing fancy. Let’s block for these guys, huh?”
Jack claps and breaks the huddle as he lines up behind the center.
Jack: ”Red-80!”
Jack takes a quick glance at the defense as all of the pieces seem to be lined up properly for the play to work.
Jack: ”Hut! Hut!”
Announcer: “Slingin’ Jack takes the snap, drops back to pass. The Cowboys are only electing to rush three. Jack has all day to pass! Jack dances around, giving his men some time to come out of their route. Oh, he’s got Jones! Jack throws the ball deep downfield and it is caught! Jones has one man to beat...touchdown!”
The crowd explodes into cheers as Jack Santore drops the pass right into his receivers hands and his team scores the touchdown.
Announcer: “Slingin’ Jack with a perfect rainbow of a pass there! Jones with the catch of the night! But the Patriots are still down by 3 after Sanchez nails the extra point. Can their defense make the stop and get the ball back into the hands of Slingin’ Jack?”
Jack is back on the sidelines now, watching carefully on the bench. His hands come up to rest under his chin as he and the rest of his teammates hope and pray for a stop by his defense. He knew it was a silly thing to pray for but when he was in the game, he loved nothing more than to win.
Announcer: “The Patriots defense rushes the quarterback. He drops back but the edge rusher has the sack! Oh, and the ball is on the ground after a vicious hit by Poe! Poe drops down on the ball and the Patriots have the ball back with 42 seconds remaining! 24-21 Cowboys, now let’s see what Slingin’ Jack can do.
Jack takes the field again, feeling his heartbeat a million miles a minute. The field and the noise feel like it’s gone. He’s completely in the moment, he knows what he has to do to get his team a win.
Jack: ”Alright, we’ve got a few shots at this thing but not much. Let’s try a sweep here and see where it goes. Alright? Break!”
Announcer: “Jack lines up under center and takes the snap. He throws to Jones...no! It’s a pump fake as he hands it off to Dickson! Dickson gets 11 yards on a sweep but the clock is ticking and the Patriots still have a ways to go.”
Jack comes back into the huddle a little bit dissapointed after the previous play didn’t yield as many yards as he would’ve liked. But he’s a leader and he doesn’t show it to anyone.
Jack: ”Alright, it looks like we’ve gotta pass. That was a good play but their defense is waiting for the run. Let’s try a hook and ladder. We’ve still got 32 seconds, we’re good. Break!”
Announcer: “Jack takes the snap as he drops back to pass. He’s got Jones on a hook and ladder! The safety bit at that one! Jack lets it fly and it’s caught! Jones tackled at the 3 yard line with 8 seconds remaining!”
Jack runs down the field to get his men lined up! With no timeouts he has to get them in position before the clock hits zero! The team is well-disciplined though as they listen to his commands!
Announcer: Five seconds remain now as Jack takes the snap! He dances around in the backfield, looking for Jones. But Jones is covered up! Jack tucks the ball under his arm and he’s taking off! Jack runs and dives into the end zone! Touchdown! Patriots win!”
The crowd explodes into cheers, as does the team, cheerleaders and even the opposing fans applaud the tenacity of Jack Santore and the Patriots. However, the good-feeling is short-lived as the pile on top of Jack is cleared, he remains down, clutching at his elbow. The trainers from his team immediately run onto the field as they check on Jack, who winces in pain after sending his team to the playoffs.
Announcer: “This is just bad news for Jack. And after getting his team the win, for a game to end this way is just a complete tragedy. And now Patriots Park has gone silent, as we all pray for the well-being of Slingin’ Jack.”
