Opening Thoughts
Julianna: Publicly, as many are getting to know by now, I am very in your face. I speak my mind and I don’t filter my own thoughts at all. I’ve got a very strong sense of bravado. But at the same time, as much as I hate to admit it sometimes, I am also human. As much as I’d love to go out and win every single match I compete in, I know it’s impossible. I’m eclectic when it comes to my own mood. When I win, I am extremely happy and I feel like I can take on the world. My ego gets the biggest rush of adrenaline you can imagine and I milk that win for all that it is worth. But then the losses… oh GOD the losses…
Painful… very painful!
I don’t consider myself a perfectionist by any means, but being a mainstream rookie, wins and losses are critical at this stage of my career and that’s why when I lose, I tend to be harder on myself. My ego is essentially shattered for a few days. Yeah, I know that it’s the nature of the business. Losses are going to happen and I have to learn how to cope with them better, but the Super Falcon Cup was an experience that threw me for a roller coaster. It was amazing getting to the semifinals. A “Flash” wannabe who in reality, had no future in this business to begin with, wasn’t athletic enough to stop me. A “pure wrestler” who was no nonsense and cast me off as a gimmick and as a model wasn’t good enough to beat me. And yet, it took this… GIRL…
This bubbly, moronic, annoying GIRL… to bounce me from the tournament.
Are you KIDDING ME? Coby and Tillman couldn’t stop me, yet HONEY did?
For FUCK’S sake!
I was looking forward to facing Amy Jo Smyth in the finals, but unfortunately, that’s not going to happen now. This loss to Honey didn’t take me “days” to get over. In fact, if I could be perfectly honest, I don’t think I’m over it. But still, I made an impression on someone. I’ve got another opportunity, one that I can’t afford to waste. It’s my first mainstream experience on a flagship show: Eternal Lucha II. And you can bet that I am going to give it everything I’ve got against two veterans who have far more name value than me.
Fine! So be it! At that event, I am going to do what I did when I beat Coby and when I beat Tillman…
I’m going to shock the world… AGAIN… and win that Soaring Eagles Championship!
Part One
Date: July 13, 2017
`Nearly two weeks after her apparent confidence-shattering loss to Honey in the Super Falcon Cup semifinals, Julianna DiMaria is back home in San Diego. She’s taking a breather from training and taking a breather from the wrestling scene in general as she sits in her parents’ living room just playing a random video game on her phone. Her eyes narrow, indicating that she’s still bothered by her Super Falcon Cup loss and in fact, she’s actually thinking about it far too much.
Julianna (thinking): I should have had it! I should have had it! I should have had it! How could I lose to HER? Of all people… HER! Bloody fucking hell! HOW? She’s not even taken THAT seriously on the Redemption main roster for fuck’s sake! I should have beaten her and yet I didn’t? What is wrong with me? What is it with being in these big matches that I should be winning, and yet, for some reason or another, I don’t? UGH! I wish I could be far more consistent than I am right now, but my GOD, I’m so sick of being cursed by all this “youth and inexperience” that keeps holding me back.
Julianna groans as she looks at her phone, giving an indication that she just lost whatever game she was playing on it. She tosses it across the living room and the phone bounces off the other couch on the opposite end of the room and gently falls on the floor. Julianna hears a deep sigh from above her and she looks up to see her mother standing above her shaking her head.
Julianna: What?
Mrs. DiMaria: Can you NOT throw things across the room?
Julianna: You’re lucky I don’t have the money to move out yet.
Mrs. DiMaria: And you’re lucky that your father and I would never dare throw you out on the street. Is something bothering you? I know that in WCG, you were having some troubles catching a bit of a break but at least you got a win on their last show.
Julianna: Right, yeah, that’s fine. I just… why can’t I get over this?
Her mother rolls her eyes, annoyed by Julianna’s immaturity.
Mrs. DiMaria: Are you kicking your own ass over the Super Falcon Cup? AGAIN?
Julianna: I should have won!!!
Mrs. DiMaria: You didn’t. Now get over it! I love you Julianna, but oh my goodness, you can’t move out of this house fast enough!
Julianna: Excuse me?
Mrs. DiMaria: I don’t really know what else to say to you since you always react this way after every loss.
She lets out an annoyed sigh as her father comes into the picture from the kitchen. Her mother walks over to the other side of the room to pick up Her phone and she sets it on the table.
Julianna: I’m right here.
Mrs. DiMaria: You’re an adult, you can stand up and get it yourself.
Mr. DiMaria: So, am I missin’ anything?
Mrs. DiMaria: Julianna’s still not over losing in the Super Falcon Cup.
Mr. DiMaria: Oh Christ! Jules, seriously!
Julianna: I don’t want a double team lecture right now.
Julianna scoffs at both of her parents.
Mr. DiMaria: You know you’ve got to go to Mexico City in a few weeks right? You’re competing in their biggest show of the year for crying out loud. Shouldn’t that make you happy?
Julianna: Whatever!
Julianna folds her arms, continuing to cut herself off from her parents. But suddenly, the conversation is interrupted by the sound of the doorbell ringing.
Mrs. DiMaria: Were we expecting anyone today?
Mr. DiMaria: Not that I know of. Hold on, let me go get that.
Julianna’s father leaves the conversation for a bit as he goes to the front door. Her mother meanwhile, is seated on the couch across from Julianna’s. She doesn’t even bother trying to talk to her creating this awkward tension that’s in the air. Julianna’s curiosity peaks when she overhears her father suddenly sounding a tad excited at the front door. She hears the sound of the front door widening and she’s not paying too much attention to what’s going on until her father re-enters the conversation although he didn’t return to it alone.
Julianna: Who’s this guy?
Mr. DiMaria: Jules, this guy comes form GOL. He’s from their talent agency department and he wants to have a conversation with ya.
Julianna: Oh?
Man: Hello! We’ve been meaning to talk to you for a while. I represent GOL and their talent agency and I just wanted to follow up with you considering you recently participated in the Super Falcon Cup AND since you’re going to be competing for the Soaring Eagle Championship soon. Mind if I sit down anywhere?
Mrs. DiMaria: No, you can sit down anywhere. You don’t mind if my husband and I take part in this conversation, do you?
GOL Rep: Oh no! Not at all! In fact, it would be my honor!
Julianna’s father sits down next to her mother and the representative from GOL walks over to the recliner in between both couches. Julianna sits up straight, suddenly regaining a bit of the obnoxiously professional attitude that she has become known for in the wrestling business in such a short amount of time
GOL Rep: So, first thing’s first. I’m sorry that you weren’t able to get to the finals of the Super Falcon Cup.
Julianna: Don’t remind me, please.
GOL Rep: But you have to admit that getting to wrestle at Eternal Lucha and getting a chance at the Soaring Eagles Championship is the best “consolation prize” you could possibly have.
Julianna: Believe me, I’m trying to get myself perked up for that.
Mrs. DiMaria: Julianna has a tendency to be overly self-critical whenever she loses.
GOL Rep: I see! Well, don’t you worry about that because the biggest reason why I’m here? Let’s talk some turkey, amigos. Julianna is one of the finest young wrestlers to come out of Southern California in quite some time. We at GOL were extremely impressed by her performance in the Super Falcon Cup even though she lost in the semifinals. When you are able to walk into that labyrinth against a guy like Jack Tillman, and despite your limited experience, defeat him, then clearly, you are someone that is worth keeping an eye on and from what we’ve seen of you in WCG, chica, on top of what you were able to do in this tournament, we look at you as someone who can really make a long term impact in this business.
Julianna smiles slightly, feeling a little bit better hearing that from someone. It’s this brief bit of reassurance that gives her back a little more of the confidence that she needed to have in light of falling short so far into the tournament.
GOL Rep: In fact, by long term impact, we mean at Eternal Lucha and beyond. Furthermore, we here at GOL want you to make that long term impact in our company not just at Eternal Lucha, but for a long time to come because you truly showed us something as you were going through that tournament. So, on behalf of Guerreros of Lucha, I come to you with this…
The representative from GOL pulls out a packet of papers from his coat pocket and sets it down on the coffee table. Julianna and her parents are suddenly intrigued. Julianna doesn’t know what to make of this, but when she glances at her parents, she can easily see that her mother’s eyes are lighting up and her father is beaming with pride.
Julianna: What… what is this?
GOL Rep: We want you to be a permanent part of our roster. There’s our offer as well as our terms. Don’t you worry, it’s a non-exclusive deal so you can continue to compete for West Coast Genesis as well.
Julianna is surprised seeing this as she reaches over to pick up the contract offer. She unfolds the packet and takes a glance at what she’s being offered and she raises her eyebrows in surprise.
Julianna: Whoa! I don’t know what to say… I mean… you see THAT much value in me?
Mr. DiMaria: Stop selling yourself short, Jules! I know ya ain’t feeling great because of your loss, but just because ya lost to Honey doesn’t mean you’re terrible!
Mrs. DiMaria: If they didn’t see anything in you, you wouldn’t be seeing that contract offer. Speaking of that, can we take a look at it?
Julianna doesn’t hesitate as she hands over the contract offer to her parents. While they do that, she continues her conversation with the talent scout.
Julianna: I never realized I was THAT impressive.
GOL Rep: Believe me, you are. You’re essentially carrying the WCG brand better than their champion is right now and it’s only a matter of time before you become West Coast Champion. You’re cutting your teeth in the developmental ranks and that’s great. I don’t doubt that you’ll be on their main roster before too long. But we’re giving you a big time opportunity not just at Eternal Lucha, but in the future. This would be your opportunity to shine in front of a bigger audience and your style is perfect for us. We truly admire what you bring to the table and there’s no question in my mind that with how your parents trained you and with the experience you’d have with us, you’d eventually develop into the total package. You’re not a talent that we at GOL run into very often. I know we’re coming to you at a bit of a rough time which is why we’re giving you until Eternal Lucha itself to decide.
Mr. DiMaria: I don’t know Jules… I mean… this is a damn good offer.
Mrs. DiMaria: Yeah, it’s enough money for you to move out!
Julianna rolls her eyes as both of her parents have a bit of a lighthearted moment to herself.
Julianna: Very funny, mother…
Julianna sighs.
Julianna: So that means there’s a chance I might be a champion without a contract?
GOL Rep: If you don’t sign, you get to stick around until you lose the title. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The decision is really up to you.
Julianna glances back at the contract offer as her mother lays it down on the coffee table. She thinks long and hard about it. In the back of her mind, she knows that the money would be good, but money is far from the reason why she’s even in the business to begin with.
Julianna: Right… this is a lot to take in.
GOL Rep: Take whatever time you need to decide, chica.
Julianna: I’ll take the next couple of weeks to think about it and then I’ll let you know at Eternal Lucha.
GOL Rep: Fantastico! I will see you then! Until then, take care of yourself.
Julianna and the talent agent stand up at the same time. They shake hands before they say their final goodbyes. The agent quickly thanks her parents as they stand up to shake his hand before he leaves their home. Julianna’s mother extends her arms from her, wanting a hug. Julianna rolls her eyes and complies with this as they embrace.
Mrs. DiMaria: I’m so proud of you!
Julianna: Thanks!
They let each other go, and Julianna exchanges the same embrace with her father.
Mr. DiMaria: You’re truly moving on up, Jules. Now, it’s your decision but… take the offer.
Mrs. DiMaria: You’ve got an opportunity in front of you your father and I never did!
Julianna: I’ll mull it over. Thanks guys!
Julianna takes the contract offer and heads upstairs to her bedroom. Once she enters her room and shuts the door, she places the offer down on a table and sits down at it, thinking about how to feel about it. She has a small smile on her face, indicating a sense of pride that she managed to attract interest from GOL as a result of her performance, but at this point, she only has one thing on her mind.
Julianna: One step at a time… let’s win that Soaring Eagle Championship first!
Julianna at this point, is finally moving past the Super Falcon Cup loss to Honey and is beginning to think about her immediate future in WCG: winning the West Coast Championship in about a month’s time, as well as GOL: winning the Soaring Eagles Championship.
Was Julianna going to take GOL’s offer?
Was she going to take another big step to advance her nascent wrestling career?
Until the night of the event itself, the answers to those questions and the fate of her promising future lied in her very hands.
