~Airports Suck: Off Camera~
Today was a day I had been dreading for a good while now. After talking with my son a bit he convinced me to introduce him to Isaac. I was nervous as hell about it considering how well Jase is known to take new men in my life and the last thing I really wanted was this one being scared off.
Granted Isaac had already hung around both Sarah and Elijah and surprisingly enough he was pretty great with them but teenagers are a lot different than children. Elijah is nothing more than a happy one and a half-year-old and Sarah is a four-year-old that's pretty easy to get on the same page with as long as you have Disney movies and pizza or popcorn.
Jase, however... My thirteen-year-old son from my first marriage is a bit of a delicate subject for me. For the longest time, I was all he had. The only man after his biological father that he ever approved of was Joey. Hell, even him and Andy have a strained relationship and that's the man that helped create him.
I let out a soft sigh, my eyes scanning the airport as I waited for Jase's flight to come in. He had spent the last week in Jersey with his dad, part of the process of me trying to help them mend their differences and have some sort of normal parent-child relationship. After all, if the father is willing to play a role it's not right to keep the child away from him.
“Flight 1169 from Newark has arrived at terminal three.”
Pulling myself up from my seat I made my way over to the exit gate for the plane that had just arrived, after about 15 or so minutes Jase was escorted off the flight and brought to me, not waiting too long we made our way toward the baggage claim area.
“How was your dads?”
“We had a good time. There was a lot of eating out because you know how well dad can cook.”
I laughed some, that was completely true. He was hopeless in a kitchen, last memory I have of him trying to make anything was toast and he managed to damn near burn the house down.
“Did you guys go out and do anything fun?”
“Yeah, he took me to play laser tag, we gamed a bit together, he tried to get me out to mini golf but I wasn't having that. Suggested bowling instead. It was fun, mom. Nothing bad happened and I'm back in one piece. Oh yeah, he wanted me to give you this.”
Jase dug into the pocket of his jeans and pulled a folded piece of paper out of it, handing the paper up to me as I kind of looked at it a bit confused.
“What is it?”
“He said he just wanted to write you a note. I was tempted to read it but I decided not to.”
I raised an eyebrow, looking down at my boy as we finally got to the baggage claim. As we waited for the luggage to start coming out I looked at the folded note in my hand and started to unfold it. My eyes scanning it once it was open.
‘Dear Blair,
I'd really like to thank you for giving me the chance to be a dad to Jase again. I've done a lot of shitty things in the span of the years we've known each other and I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am for all the things I've put you through.
Reflecting back on everything I would change a lot of things I've done. I know there's no hope left for us but at least you're giving me a chance to make up for all the missed time with Jase. For that, I am truly grateful. I feel like, even though we never got the hang of things with us, we managed to make a pretty great child. Our boy is pretty amazing considering everything he has been through and I know that's in large part due to you.
Jase was telling me about your most recent ‘trails’ and I just want to let you know if you ever need someone to talk to I'm here for you, don't hesitate to give me a call. Hopefully, things work for you this time around, you really do deserve someone that'll give you the world, you're an amazing woman, amazing mother and even though you don't show it, you have one of the biggest hearts I've ever known anyone to have. I wish you nothing but the best, hun.
Love,
Andy’
I shook my head a bit as I finished reading the letter, folding it back up and tucking it away in the back pocket of my jeans.
“Was it bad?”
“Nah, it was probably one of the nicest things your father ever wrote to me.”
The belt had started moving at this point and Jase quickly found his bag, grabbing it and flinging it over his shoulder. I didn't really feel like talking to him about what Andy had written so we walked out of the airport in silence. He seemed pretty happy while I was screaming a bit on the inside because of what was to come.
