“This looks like the place.”
Mason Moore pulled his rented 2017 Ford Explorer up to a valet stand in front of a large park as he smiled at his passenger, Sapphire. He got out of the car and went to open her door, but it was already done by the valet. Mason had gone fairly casual with a pair of cargo shorts and a blue polo shirt. He looked around at the place, hoping that his choice of celebration location would be approved of.
“I was sure you would have found an excuse to make me break out one of my dresses.”
Despite the rib, it seems he succeeded. Sapphire steps out of the SUV in her choice of casual wear, a pale blue heather tank top and violently pink pants made to look vaguely like jeans, with pockets and belt loops and the like, but that anyone within a hundred feet with functioning eyes could easily tell are yoga pants.
“And miss the chance to see you in yoga pants?”
Mason gave her a wink and took a quick glance at her ass, then looked back up to her.
“So this is your celebration, you pick what we do first. There’s apparently a bunch of different arcade games, life size chess, giant connect four, there’s a floating garden that’s supposed to be pretty cool. There’s some places to eat, heard about a place that has great taco’s. Ladies choice.”
Mason smiled as he did his best impression of a gentleman and offered her his arm to take as they made their way to the man made park right on the harbor. Giggling (a sound and look that sounded and looked absurd on such a woman) she takes the offered arm. She assumes this is just an excuse to make her feel his muscles, but she takes it anyway, cupping the bicep with her hand. Was that the proper way? Did she look like the kind of woman who would know?
“I think the answer is obvious. One of us worked hard today, and she wants something to eat better than the meager offerings of catering.”
Sapphire leaves out the part where catering had to cater to 64 more people than they’re used to. But come on, they had months to prepare! Mason laughed a little, both at the giggle and her comment about the catering.
“Then let’s go get some tacos.”
Mason looked down, at her hand on his arm and smiled as they made their way to the small taco stand. He noticed a few strange looks towards the massively muscled pair, but shrugged them off. They were somewhat busy but the line moved quick.
“Hi, two barbacoa tacos, two of the el pastor, and the beautiful lady will have…”
Mason looked over to Sapphire with a bit of a smirk, then winked at her. She mock glares at him before finishing the order.
“Two suaderos, thanks.”
She looks back over at Mason, an eyebrow quirked.
“If you’re not careful, people are going to think this is a thing.”
“Worse things have happened.”
Mason smirks as he gets each of them a margarita.
“To the first of many victories”
Mason raises his glass and flashes her the smile that’s worked on many women before, and he hopes will once again. Sapphire can’t help but laugh at the sight of two adults, each at the peak of physical conditioning, holding a plate of food truck tacos in one hand and a margarita in a plastic cup in the other. But that doesn’t stop her from drinking to the toast. Once she’s done that, she looks at Mason, expression on her face that is both serious and mischievous at the same time. I’d say it was split down the middle of her face if it wasn’t a blatant lie, but it’s more likely the seriousness was in her brow while the mischief lay in her eyes.
“I’ll have to pick your brain over the coming two weeks then. Unless there’s a better person you can think of to ask for tips on how to beat Coda.”
Mason half sighs half laughs as he runs two fingers over the small cut above his eye.
“It’s not gonna be easy, and don’t let her get anywhere near a chair.”
He laughs a little bit more this time.
“Your best strategy is gonna be to get her quick, hit a big move and then just keep attacking. If you give her an opening, she will take it and strike at you like a tiny very angry little wolverine.”
Mason runs his hand across his throat, remembering the brutal attack from a few weeks ago. He shook the thoughts from his head and looked back to Sapphire.
“I have complete confidence in you though.”
Mason smiled at her, then took a massive bite of one of his tacos. She smiles back, though she has the decency to make it a modest one, given he had been talking about the wars he’s had with the woman.
“My usual strategy then. Got it.”
She takes a bite of a taco herself, then raises an eyebrow. She pulls her phone out of her extremely fashionable and not at all garish pocket, looks at it for a moment, then puts it back. Most people would assume that it was just a time check, or maybe a case of phantom vibration, but Mason notices her eyes darken a little, the mischief that had lived there replaced with something less amiable. He raises an eyebrow at her, but before he can say anything, Sapphire starts first.
“You remember the woman that was at my apartment after our last...excursion?”
Mason has to think for a few seconds as both of them had a fair amount to drink that night.
“Kind of, Kate or Kelly or uhm… I remember it started with a K.”
Mason laughs a little bit as he finishes off a taco.
“Is she not happy that you’re out with the guy who got you drunk?”
A bit of mirth returns to Sapphire’s expression.
“Maybe not? I dunno, if she isn’t, I’m a big girl who can take care of herself.”
Sapphire frowns again. She opens her mouth to say something, then closes it again. Then she opens it again.
“Kim, and if she can survive the legal whirlpool, she owns the gym now.”
Her expression is strained; she’s trying to make small talk, and at the surface level, her friend now owning outright the gym she uses, and the one that Mason and Sapphire had briefly discussed business over, should be a good thing, but Sapphire’s eyes don’t match the smile on her face.
“Something tells me you’re not completely thrilled about that fact?”
Mason looks over at her, trying to figure her out, but her poker face is better than she thinks. The concern is there, but he can’t figure out if she’s worried for her friend or angry that she got the gym.
“I’m happy for her, and the fact she has it. It’s the circumstances that have me worried.”
Sapphire frowns, pulling her phone out again to look at it. It doesn’t seem like she got another message, she’s just looking at it now. She sighs.
“I dunno, I’ve got friends watching her. I should just relax.”
“That does sound like a good plan.”
Mason flashes her a smile, then finishes off his last taco and downs the rest of his margarita.
“I know what will help with that.”
Mason walks off and disappears for a couple of minutes, but then comes back with a margarita in each hand.
“We drink these and go play some air hockey. Unless of course you want a game that you can actually win.”
Mason smirked and winked as he teased her a little bit. Sapphire raises an eyebrow, a slight smirk on her face in response to the challenge.
“Oh really? Well I tell you what..I’ll play your game, but afterwards you’re going to lose to me on the mini-basketball hoops game. If it comes to it, we can break the tie on neutral ground.”
Sapphire pauses a second, blinking as she takes the drink from Mason. Then the half-smirk turns into a full on grin. Then she pounds back her drink as fast as she can, which she’s pretty sure isn’t how margaritas are supposed to work, but if so, they shouldn’t use such shitty plastic cups.
“We can figure that out on the way.”
“Oh, it’s on now.”
Mason winks, then downs his margarita as they make their way towards the large storage trailers that have been converted into an arcade. There were a few air hockey tables and luckily one was empty. Mason pumped a few quarters in, pulled the puck, dropped it and smirked at Sapphire. One quick flick of his wrists and the puck flew forward straight for her goal.
“One, nothing.”
Over the next several minutes, this cycle repeated. Sapphire got a little better at defense, but her shots, while powerful, were usually off the mark. In the end, Mason got the result he expected, a 7-0 victory at air hockey. But Sapphire got her revenge a few minutes later. Stung by the shutout and drawing on old habits, she beat Mason 38-20 in the arcade mini-hoops machine. Sapphire wasn’t particularly fast at shooting, but she sank most of the balls she threw. That leaves them to figure out how to break the tie.
“Hmmm, what can we do that we’re both either really good at, or really bad at?”
Mason thinks for a second as he looks around.
“I doubt either of us would be bad at anything, so let’s go with something old school. Skee ball.”
Mason smirks as he goes over to one of the skee ball machines, inserts a few coins and hits the button for two player. He grabs the first ball, takes a step back, and hurls it up the ramp. It lands in the middle fifty section and he smiles back at Sapphire.
“Lucky first throw.”
Sapphire grins.
“Well we’ll see how that plays out.”
It turns out he was right. Sapphire lands a lot of 30s, but Mason is all over the place, landing mostly 10s, but occasionally getting into one of the 50s tucked into the top corners. A couple minutes later, then come to the end of the game, with Mason up 20 points on Sapphire’s last throw. She lines up her shot, rolls it firmly up the ramp... Right in the center! The machine starts beeping and whooping and spitting out tickets and making a big ruckus, as arcade machines are wont to do. All the while, Sapphire is giving Mason the slightest of shit-eating grins.
“Well… shit.”
Mason laughs a little bit as he sees her smirking.
“Did we set any kind of actual wager on this contest? Was it loser has to strip for the winner?”
Mason looked over at Sapphire with a smirk and a wink. Sapphire continues grinning.
“I think we got caught up in competition before we actually decided on the stakes. But if you’re offering...”
“Well this is your celebration and I said whatever you want.”
Mason laughed a little and smirked at her as he started raising his shirt up, but then stopped and looked around.
“I think that might be a hotel room kind of thing though.”
Sapphire chuckles.
“I think you’re right. But we’re heading to my hotel room.”
Mason raises an eyebrow as he drops his shirt back down, but she just stares at him, her face stoic but her eyes seeming to gleam.
“I want to make sure the show is just for me.”
“Of course beautiful.”
Mason gives her a wink then offers his arm once more as they head back to his truck.
