B is for The Bay
ON CAMERA
Austen Blackwell is sitting on the edge of a concrete edge that drops off into the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The waves roll in and crash hard up against the wall, sending mist of the salty water up into the air. The sound of gulls in the air, looking for their next meal. Austen runs his hand through his hair as just behind him parked into a spot is the black SUV of Blackwell.
As he looks out towards the water, he begins to speak into the camera without eyes into the camera.
“South Bay… L.A. Something that is not too far from hope, and my first shot at something real. Something more real than I’ve had in a long time. I’ve wrestled in a few local companies and then across the border. I’ve had my fair share of this company title match or that company title match, but we all know that you have zero chance coming into the match if you aren’t from the promotion. And if you are able to pull off the win? You will be hated by the fans for being an outsider and are forced to different standards. But here? In SoCal. With West Coast Genesis? I am home. I’ve found my place. And with Mercedes, I feel truly at home for a change. A chance to be myself.”
Another waves splashes up against the wall as the mist hits Austen. He doesn’t seem to matter as the hot sun baked down on him. He runs a hand through his hair again.
“This match is going to be a cluster of a match. Let’s see… my two good friends Danni and Donovan. My friend Ruby Rose. Jess Hardy. And newcomer Zachary Sears. A ladder match meaning that you do not have to pin or submit someone, but just be the lucky one to be in the right place at the right time. Be quick. Be nimble. Two things I can do.”
He smiles off into the distance as the Pacific Ocean just seems to extend on forever.
“I know that before and after the bell rings, some of the people in the match will be my friends. But between the starting and finishing bell, it is business and they will do the same. I will do what I need to do to put my own body on the line. I know that I may come away with bumps and bruises, cuts and nicks… but that is the business that we are fine. I am prepared for it mentally, and ready. Each of my opponents bring something different to the table. I do quite enjoy that the sexes are even… three of us boys and three girls. I know that Danni and Donovan are together, and so that will be an interesting thing there. Will they work together? Quite possibly. But do they need to? Nah. They are both top notch contenders.”
Austen turns his attention back towards the camera as his eyes flicker in the sunlight as another wave crashes and sends a mist up and over the native-Californian. The so-called Cali Boy takes the waves in stride and is the least amount bothered by them.
“You have someone like Jess Hardy who is a badass in her own right. And we cannot forget Ruby Rose. The one person that could call herself the Ambassador of West Coast Genesis. Everyone seems to know her, and always seems to have a positive attitude. Either of those two ladies have a great opportunity to represent the brand as well, and represent this very area. The South Bay. A place that many people call home, and are damn proud of it.”
Austen looks down, and sees the waves crashing harder as the top of the water is white from the harsh crashing into the concrete that many fishermen sit and enjoy some relaxing sport.
“It’s quite deep. I think fifteen. Twenty feet? For being up against the concrete and with the waves, it is not a place you want to jump in head first. But I know that is exactly what Zachary Sears is doing. His first match in West Coast Genesis, and he is battling for a championship. I am not going to hate, I wish him the best of luck. I am not sure his own personal motivations or drive, but I know that he struggled in Indy Pro Wrestling before. I’ve made sure to do my research. I know that his sister had some success in her career, and so if two siblings are in this business and are able to get themselves signed, it shows what sort of drive their family has. I can respect that. To the fullest.”
Austen closes his eyes and breathes in deep.
“Sometimes we need to take a leap of faith. We need to do what it takes to rise above the rest. Put our best foot forward. And to show just why we are something special. In a company of a couple of dozen people it is easy to find yourself lost among the roster. Instead of hoping that Kaylee has something for me, I intend on making my own waves and making sure that I am known. I might be a Cali Boy, but that does mean I am lazy or too relaxed. Business comes first and I am in the business of me. So far? Business is going well.”
He opens his eyes as he stands up.
“Perhaps being a daredevil in life can be costly, but if it pays out then the dividends are so worth it. What do I know about dividends? Perhaps you should all invest and see just what I have to offer.”
He smiles and lets go of the railing behind him, jumping forward into the water but far enough to where he is not close to the concrete. After a few seconds, Austen comes up as the camera sees him swimming around to some nearby rocks to exit the ocean.
