With each passing step, Coda's eyes remained steady even as she felt the immense pain coursed throughout her body. A drop of blood trickled down her forehead and down her cheek until the blood cells met her lips. With a spit, the blood smacked against the wall and as she glanced over her shoulder, she noticed the EMTs were no longer following her. The cameras were out of sight. Mason Moore was strapped to a gurney, likely headed for the ambulance by now.
With a sigh of relief, she continued to painfully limp forward with an occasional groan escaping her blood stained lips. Her body ached like she was walking through Hell itself, strolling along the nine circles with a casual indifference to anything not in sight. Reaching over with one arm to the other, she noticed a lone splinter sticking out of her forearm. With a wince, she felt the wood between her thump and forefinger, those dark black eyes still solidly focused on her destination. Glancing to the left, she noticed her locker room and swiftly peeled the door open. Once she was inside, she shut the door behind her and dropped to her knees in agony.
"Yuri!" Mara called out, eyes wide as she quickly approached her sister with caution. "Are you okay? Okay— Bad question."
"I... I am fine," Yuri responded between gritted teeth. As Mara held open a small ziplock bag in front of her, Yuri immediately removed her crimson red earplugs one at a time and tossed them in the plastic baggie. As Yuri remained planted on her knees, Mara saw the splinter that bothered her so much.
"Have I ever told you the story of the lion with the thorn in his paw?" With a sweet smile, Mara attempted to calm her sister down as she carefully examined the splinter implanted into Yuri's skin. "There's a lot of different versions but the way Mom used to tell it..."
Yuri didn't speak. All she did was wordlessly watch as her sister went to work on her injuries.
"Once upon a time, a young girl sneaks into a cave and spots a vicious lion!" Mara's voice got gravelly as she mentioned the lion, growling playfully as she grabbed the first aid kit. With the flip of a switch, she opened it up and grabbed the tweezers. "The lion... He's not a happy camper, see? This little girl approached into his territory. You woulda thought her parents would be watching her more closely but that's not the point!"
Yuri shivered slightly at the sight of the tweezers.
"So the lion's dangerous as hell, okay? And he's about to bite her face clean off! Suddenly, the girl sees something. What is it?"
The tweezers slowly approach Yuri's splinter in her forearm like a metal miniature shark ready to bite its next victim.
"It's a thorn. Riiight on his paw," Mara explains softly, pinching the tweezers together around the splinter. Yuri winces.
"Before the lion even knows what's going on... Yank!" A grunt escapes Yuri's lips. The splinter is removed.
"And yeah, you'd have thought that the lion would've swallowed her whole after that one but that's not what happened in the story. See, the lion and the girl... They came to an understanding," Mara smiled, reaching into the first aid kit again to find the disinfectant.
"This is gonna sting," Mara whispered. Yuri tensed up. The disinfectant made her groan almost as loud as when she pulled out the splinter.
After cleaning the wound, Mara pulled out the first aid kit again and grabbed a couple Daffy Duck bandaids. Carefully putting one over the splinter wound, she admired her handiwork.
"See, once the lion was all fixed up," Mara explained once she was done crudely stitching the wound on Yuri's forehead with the skills she learned in medical school, wrapping the whole thing up in a white bandage. "The little girl realized that the lion was just upset about the thorn. It was driving him nuts! And now, with the thorn gone, with the kindness the little girl showed... They're best friends to this day. I bet she taught the lion tricks like a dog. Haha!"
"... Mara...?" Yuri spoke again, looking in Mara's general direction. "T-Thank you. I do not say this enough. I do not know where I would be without you."
"Pfft. We're family. We help each other. You're the lion and I'm the girl. See? Get it? A little kindness can go a long way and not everyone is what they seem on the surface," Mara smiled softly, cleaning up the blood from Yuri's pale skin.
"I want to go home," Yuri whispered as she looked down at the floor.
"Then what are we waiting for? Let's get out of here."
