(A camera flickers to life, showing the brightly lit, bustling city of South Philadelphia. From all directions, Saturday revelers are roaming about at varying levels of inebriation. Girls dressed from white-trash hussies all the way to the classiest Bond Girl emerging from and entering bars and clubs. Men fishing in a big pond, looking for the one who is going to keep their bed warm for the night. The stars of the night sky are nowhere in sight because of all the bright lights, advertising various shops and clubs. In the midst of all this, from off-camera, a voice begins to speak. It's a woman's voice; clear, smooth and melodic, with just a hint of a mid-Western accent. She speaks just loud enough to be heard over the noise in the streets, sounding as though she's reading from a story book.)
“Ambitious. Talented. Hard-working. Perky. Silly. Genius. Dangerous.
These are just a few words to describe the subject of our story. Hardly a new story for our little heroine, but here begins a new chapter.
This is the story of one small town girl out of rural Iowa. Betsy Granger, at a glance, is your typical, all-American young lady. The truth, however, was that this young lady was then, and is to this day, quite exceptional. It was obvious from an early age that the cute green-eyed, blonde-haired farmers daughter was going to be something special. Before she hit pre-school, the precocious girl could already work high-numbered addition and subtraction problems. She could read at a 4th-grade level. She knew all her primary colors and which ones to mix to make secondary colors. She knew her shapes and sizes.
Suffice it to say, her parents had their hands full. Teachers advised them that their daughter should be taken out of her normal class and placed in a special school for academically gifted children. Her father couldn’t have been prouder and ready to do just that. Her mother… Well, her mother was an old-fashioned type of woman. She looked at her younger, brainy daughter with shame, believing that a woman’s purpose was to exploit her beauty to fetch a husband and become a housewife.
You see, Betsy is the younger of two girls to the Granger parents. Her older sister, Adelaide, is exactly what Mommy always wanted. Bombshell looks, demure, obedient and without a brain inside her pretty head. When Mommy Granger started pushing Addie towards the beauty pageant side of life, Addie didn’t fight it. In fact, she reveled in it, just as her mother did. So it was only natural for Mommy Granger to believe that her second daughter would turn out just the same.
Whoops.
But I digress, for this story isn’t about alluring Addie, it’s about Brainy Betsy. That was her nickname all through school, you know. Brainy Betsy, the nerd who managed to become a facet on the cheerleading squad and, surprise surprise, several language clubs.
Oh dear, I’m getting ahead of myself. Where was I? Oh, yes… So little Betsy, with all her smarts and potential, was forced to stay right where she was at. As you might have already guessed, Betsy blew through her school work and spent most of her time in class helping the rest of them. That’s always been the kind of girl Betsy is. She doesn’t leave anyone behind. She’d rather bring you up to her level rather than drop to yours. If you can’t catch up to her… Well, so sorry for you. Anyhoo, little Betsy loved school… Which was great, because she really hated going home and dealing with her mother. I can tell you for a fact, life in that house revolved around Mommy Granger and Addy.
Home life wasn’t completely shoddy, however. Because we have Daddy Granger, who thought the sun rose and set on his brainy little girl. Behind his wife’s back, he took her to the library so she could get a head start on her learning. He signed her up for academic themed extracurricular activities to keep her brain stimulated. He was at all her science fairs, spelling bees, and cheerleading competitions. Although, the last of those were often attended by his wife as well, who saw cheerleading as Betsy’s only redeeming quality through the smog of smarts. Little did she know, Betsy only joined the squad to keep her snooty mother appeased.
One thing Daddy Granger and his little Betsy shared quite passionately, however, was wrestling. Daddy Granger was, and is, a lifelong fan of the sports entertainment industry. Betsy was all of three years old the first time she climbed into her Papa’s lap to watch a match with him. And that was all it took for her to get hooked. Daddy Granger still talks about that night with a sparkle in his eye and a chuckle in his voice. He said she fell in love with wrestling the way most girls fall in love with boys. Instantaneous and hard.
Let’s skip ahead a bit because a lot of these years are much the same. Betsy excelled but was never allowed to move forward because of her mother. The neglect only got worse as the two little girls blossomed into young ladies. Addie, of course, grew into a tall, seductive beauty of a woman with curves in all the right places. Betsy, while pretty in her own way, was tall, skinny, with little curves and a permanently set mischievous expression face. While Addie dominated the pageant circuit, Betsy dominated the academic one. It can really be no surprise she was top in her class and valedictorian of our year.
This brings us to her acceptance into the University of California in San Diego. Ah yes, this is where those who know of her came to know her. This is where she met Adam Sanders, with whom she became fast friends with. At the time of their meeting, Betsy was just as awkward and quiet as he was. She wasn’t used to the big, bustling city. She was surrounded by new, judgmental faces and she didn’t know how to respond to this.
A year later, EXODUS crash landed into her life. When she caught wind of a wrestling promotion that would be holding shows at RIMAC, in her own school, to say she was ecstatic was an understatement. She grabbed Adam and all the tickets she could afford at the time. What was already a passion turned into a full blown obsession. It didn't take her long to bond with the other fans from the school, who would eventually become some of her favorite people on the planet… her Section B friends, who would ultimately change her life for good."
(The speaker finally pauses for a moment. The camera is lifted into the air and finally, the voice is given a face; that face is, of course, Betsy Granger herself. She gives a shy smile and licks her lips before going on with her story.)
"EXODUS changed everything for me. Not all of it for the best. You see, I was pure… innocent and untouched when I came to college. Then I met Patrick… and all of that changed. I'm not blaming him, not at all. But together, we partied hard. We got into so much that should have been left alone. I also make no apologies for it. As is anything else in life, our time together was fun and a learning experience that was much needed. Patrick taught me what I did and didn't want in a relationship…
Anyway, a year and a half later, give or take, EXODUS shut its doors. We all knew it was coming, it was thick in the air leading up to it. That's when little Betsy decided to not just leave town… I was offered a scholarship to Oxford University and I took it. And without a word to anyone, I packed up my bags and left. Patrick and I had broken up by then and my rebound guy was already in love with someone else… I literally had nothing to keep me where I was.
I couldn't have asked for more of a blessing. Through school, I was able to travel to places I never dreamed I'd see. I sat in to translate and advise on foreign policy. I shook hands and sat with multiple world leaders. I rubbed elbows with some of the most powerful men and women on this planet. I graduated from Oxford with not one, but two bachelors degrees…
And now here I am. When I came back to the United States, I honestly had no idea what I was going to do. I didn't know where to settle or where to start in my career. That's when I heard my former boss, Jimmy Riley, and his lovely wife Fiona had opened up a training gym in Nashville. I knew he'd have a place for me, so I reached out to him. I snuck my way into his classes and just three, short months later…
"
(She shrugs and gives her quirky, trademark from.)
"Here I am. Getting ready to enter the ring on a competitive match for the first time. And until an hour ago, I couldn't have told you who my opponent was… Caroline… Burchill… Wait, O’Hara Burchill… "
(Betsy stops for a few moments before bursting out into song.)
"Sweeeeeeeeeet Caroline, bop bop bop, your face in the mat will look so good… so good… so good… SO GOOD."
(She giggles.)
"Listen, I could go on this full rant, talking about how I’m going to wipe the ring clean with your face. I could talk about how I’m the hottest free agent on the market today. I could definitely sit here all day and talk about how I’m going to make my way through this invitational like a bull in a china shop and not stop until I have broken everything in my path to get to the winner's circle…
I could… But I won’t. Not today, at least. I’d hate to make you feel as though someone were paying attention to you. Isn’t that what you complain about the most? No one takes you seriously, no one gives you the credit you are due. Far be it from me to break the trend now. You’re a champion, for god's sake… Woman up and act like it. Strap up those titties, stand up tall and quit your bitching. Represent that title properly, or drop it to someone who will."
(Betsy flips her hair over her shoulder and smirks into the camera.)
"Anyhow, that is the story of Betsy up to now. That’s the story the people want, obviously. I haven’t even made my professional debut yet, and I’ve already got folks clamoring for my merchandise. That’s how you’re supposed to work it in this industry, Sweet Caroline. Building a reputation is supposed to be beneficial to you, not make you look like a cry-baby bitch. Take a note from the new kid and maybe you’ll make it past the point you’re at now.
But I once again digress… I’m going to wrap this up here, because frankly, you aren’t worth the battery this is eating up. Not to mention, words are cheap. Anyone can announce themselves as a hot prospect. I plan to show it. You just happen to be the sacrificial lamb to the queen of Shade Style. YOu may not know the brand yet, but by Sunday... Well, you'll be so familiar, you won't be able to deny that it's a force to be reckoned with. So until we meet, my dear…
"
(Betsy blows a kiss into the camera and wriggles her fingers in a farewell wave.)
"Toodaloo!"
