[OFF-CAMERA]
Ruby stands in front of the mirror in her small bathroom wearing a white West Coast Genesis tank top and a pair of blue jean shorts. She is turned sideways, the strap of her tank top held down off her shoulder as she winces at the evident sunburn.
"SPF 30 my butt."
She shakes her head and pulls the strap back up onto her shoulder before making her way out of the bathroom and back into her bedroom. She collects a few items of clothing discarded on the floor, dropping them into her hamper before crossing the room to collect one more item.
It's a light blue button down shirt that honestly looks too big to fit Ruby. Unless it's meant to be an oversized bed shirt. She stares down at the shirt for a moment before bringing it up to her nose. Hey, sometimes you gotta check to make sure things are still clean! Apparently this is very clean given the smile it puts her on her face.
After folding the shirt nice and neatly, she sets it down on her perfectly made bed. She gives the room another look around, happy with the tidiness of it. That all changes when she enters the living room.
"Ugh…"
She sighs at the sight of how the living room was left. Chinese contains litter the coffee table, along with soda cans and discarded napkins. It's almost as if whoever had dinner here last night left in something of a hurry. Oh yeah. That'd be her.
Deciding the best course of action is to pitch it all, because honestly the food is no longer good since no one thought to refrigerate it, she grabs her garbage can from the kitchen and returns to just start throwing everything in.
"Last night… you were fun, but it's over."
She makes this proclamation to last night as if it were a person, and emphasizes it by throwing the last container into the garbage can.
[ON-CAMERA]
The solid steel frame of the ladder stands before us all. Look tall as a building from the camera's perspective at the bottom rung aiming up towards the very top where on July 1, 2017 the brand new South Bay Championship will be hanging for the first person able to claim it. Ruby Rose steps up to the ladder, looking exceptionally small next to the towering structure. She places a hand on one of the lower rungs and stares up at the top.
"You know, a wise woman once said that there's only two types of people in the world. Ones that entertain and ones that observe."
It's Britney Spears. While the adjective "wise" could be debated from many different angles, it doesn't change the fact that it's the quote Ruby is choosing while she eyes up the ladder that dwarfs her.
"I guess it's more than just a lyric in a pop song. Because I'm starting to get it. We're entertainers. We're all here because we want to be the best and we want to be a champion. I mean, this is our livelihood, after all. But we're here for the fans. They're our livelihood. Whether we're champion or not, it's pointless if there's no fans. So, we're entertains when it all boils down to it."
She shrugs her shoulders and looks up at the length of the ladder once more. It's not easy to hide the trepidation she has when faced with the height of it all.
"This past Hype, I went from being an observer to being an entertainer. Until this past Hype, I've struggled to fit in here. Not just in West Coast Genesis, but this whole life altogether. I started training to be a wrestler two and a half years ago. I know holds and I know moves and all the rules that come with being a wrestler, I just… I wasn't a wrestler yet. I was a girl who knew how to wrestle and a girl who had a wrestling contract."
A smile comes across her shiny pink lips and she moves her hand from one of the lower rungs to one more shoulder length on her.
"I got my first victory here in West Coast Genesis when I beat Jack Santore. It wasn't an easy victory and honestly it was one that I wasn't even sure I'd get. He's a great competitor and, like I said, I wasn't a wrestler until that moment. Not in my eyes. My first match here was a battle royal and I just felt lost in the shuffle. My second match? I was teaming with someone who let me down. In more ways than one, Cynthia let me down. Not to mention, Karston was across the ring from me and that was all more difficult than it really should have been."
She takes a deep breath that she lets out slowly in a show of releasing all that difficulty that is truly in the past.
"I'm going against friends in this match. I'm going against new faces. I'm going against some of the best that West Coast Genesis currently has. Donovan Basch is probably one of the biggest and strongest. Danni LeBlanc and Jessica Hardy are beyond fierce and they're confident in themselves, as they should be. Austen Blackwell is… a true heart, as his girlfriend will attest to, and that's almost impossible to out-match. Then there's the new kid, Zachary Sears."
Ruby gets hung up on that thought for a moment, holding a finger up to halt the proceedings as she mulls that over in her head.
"No, not that new kid. Well, new as far as West Coast Genesis is concerned. But he's not the new kid. He's got a history. He's got accomplishments. He's got… demons?"
That's a legit question, apparently. She looks to the camera for help, but there's no one that can help her. The cameraperson certainly isn't allowed to answer that for her. They're just here to film.
"I mean, regardless of his history, there may or may not be questions as to why he's able to just walk into this company and immediately get a title match. However!"
That finger gets held back up as Ruby stops anyone from jumping to any conclusions. After all, that comment may come off as a little more judgmental than Ruby typically is.
"I'm the last one who would have anything to say about that, I assure you. Hello! New girl, here. Hadn't even had a victory here when the match was even announced. So, trust me, I'm not casting stones at anyone."
With a smile and a laugh, she shrugs off any implication that she might have an issue with Zachary Sears being added to this match at the last minute.
"Whether it's five or whether it's six, I'm still the shortest person in this match. What that means is, I have further to climb that anyone else. And given the experience of everyone else, that may have more than just one meaning. We're all going into this knowing that it will be chaotic. Knowing that it might take more than just skill and experience and strength and size to become the first-ever South Bay Champion. You gotta have luck on your side, too."
Ruby shrugs her shoulders and she already has a smile on her face even before she finishes talking about the one component you gotta have on your side.
"I mean, no one knows where luck is going to fall. We don't know who's going to get blessed with it. However… I'd like to think I got pretty lucky against Jack Santore on Hype. I was lucky that I was able to turning his finisher into mine. I was lucky that he's actually a nice guy who didn't just want to rip me to shreds in that ring. Couple that luck with a little bit of experience, with two and a half years of skill, and actually you know what? My size wasn't a disadvantage. Granted, I'm not exactly calling it an advantage in a ladder much, but…"
She can't help but laugh at that one as she once again eyes up the top of the ladder that is quite a ways away from her.
"We all want the same thing. We all want to be South Bay Champion. So, I'm not going to say that I want it more. I'm not even going to say that I deserve it any more than my opponents because honestly, I love and respect everyone that I know in this match. Austen, Danni, Donovan, Jess… I know these people. I consider them friends and I'd be happy to see any of them become the first-ever South Bay Champion. Zachary… I don't know you, but I don't have anything against you. I hope it stays that way."
All she can do is shrug her shoulders on that one. She's not going to lie and say that Zachary is her friend, but she's not going to kick him aside like he doesn't matter. That's not the Ruby Rose way!
"But just because I'd be happy for you all, doesn't mean that I want to see any of you become the first-ever champion. I want to see me become the first-ever champion. I want to represent this company. I want to do what I feel like Ryan Keys does for the West Coast Championship. I want to make people smile. I want to make people happy. I want to be a positive example in this business so that people know you don't have to be negative. You don't have to tear down people to pull yourself up. You don't have to take shortcuts and you don't have to compromise integrity to be successful."
She takes in a very deep breath and after holding it for a moment, she lets it out while moving her hand up to the highest rung that she can reach.
"I've spent two and a half years climbing a ladder that only I could see. These past few months, I've climbed further than even I realized. On July 1st, I don't want to stop climbing. I don't want to go back down. I want to soar like a Phoenix."
Looking up at the top of the ladder, Ruby no longer has that trepidation on her face. She smiles with confidence and resolve, never taking her eyes off of the destination as the scene fades out.
