“Victory is fleeting”.
The aphorism, and its many permutations, has been used throughout history in regards to stakes both mortal and trivial. At Hype 002, when it applied to the circumstances of Tornado Desencadenado, it certainly fell on the less consequential range of the scale; he had only lost a wrestling match, after all.
That didn’t make it sting any less, though.
TD was sure he had that battle won. He had leveled his opponent, the journeyman grappler KEG, with a Cyclone Smash, and had dropped down to make the cover. One! Two! Thre-
But that’s when a vicious stomp to his kidneys forced him to relinquish the pin. As he clutched at his lower back Tornado felt someone grab two handfuls of his hair and lift him bodily off the mat. It was the third man in the contest, Scotty Latimer, that yanked him to his feet and hurled him out of the ring. He would then hit his own move, the Wings of an Angel, on KEG, and score the winning pin fall while the Spin Doctor recovered his bearings on the outside.
It wasn’t the first defeat Tornado had suffered in his career; and, considering he himself wasn’t ‘doing the job’, it shouldn’t have bothered the young wrestler as much as it did. But what bothered TD so much, what made this loss matter more than it should have, was that Tornado knew he was the best man in that ring, and that the match was his to win.
Only he didn’t. Tornado’s chance at making a good first impression to West Coast Genesis failed, and he wouldn’t get another. That meant TD would have to wait and find another way to prove himself. Ideally it would be against the man who had beat him before, and who had been crowing about it on social media. In the meantime, though, he had another challenge waiting for him, one who was very different from any of the others he had faced.

“Hype 003 is going to be an amazing show. The card is stacked with great matches. Five wrestlers will debut for WCG. Fans might look back to June 10, 2017 as the day Izzy Roxx, Jimmy Lane, Jack Santore, Austen Blackwell, or Chris Mosh began a legendary career under the Redemption Federation banner. Two of the company’s talents, Danni Leblanc and Rachel Redding, will be in competition that could very well be a preview of 2017 All Female Invitational Tournament Finals. The main event has West Coast Champion Ryan Keys facing one half of the Seventh Circle Gunner Wahl in a match that has both professional and personal implications. On the surface, my match against the powerhouse performer Donovan Basch might not seem as potentially monumental; but I’m here to tell you this is going to be the fight of the night, and that’s due to the stakes involved. For him, this will be a tune-up match before he competes for the South Bay Championship next month. For me, it’s an opportunity to show WCG I can beat one of the talents chosen to represent the debuting title, and put my name in the running for a shot at the belt down the line.”
TD pauses, and then expounds on what he thinks of the aforementioned booking.
“I understand why I wasn’t considered as a contender for the South Bay Title. I’m new to the roster, having only been part of one Hype show; where I lost. Those credentials do not translate into deserving championship gold, even with a promotion as young as WCG. So yeah, I am going to need to earn that spot I know I deserve, and the best way to do that is pin Donovan Basch.”
With a rueful smile, the Fundamental Elemental then makes a confession.
“Which doesn’t mean I think defeating Donovan is going to be easy. I don’t think it will be easy at all. Donovan Basch is a unique challenge for me, because it will be the one of the few times in my career I’ve facing someone who’s got me beat when it comes to power. I’ve fought bigger guys before, but to be blunt, they weren’t exactly physical marvels. They were just, you know, ‘big’.”
TD holds his hands out from his stomach, making the universal pantomime for ‘fatso’.
“So while they had the size advantage on me, none of them were really that much stronger. They definitely did have my conditioning. Donovan is a different matter. He’s bigger and stronger and still incredibly fast despite this. I won’t beat him by simply ‘sticking and moving’ in hopes of wearing him down. To win my match I’m going to have to hope my technical skill is enough to keep him off balance until I find the opening I need to get him on my shoulders for Vertigone, or connecting with the Cyclone Smash. Heck, I’ll be happy getting the win on a roll up against a beast like Basch.”
The young wrestler gives the camera a shrug.
“Really, other than that there isn’t much more to say about our match. I don’t bear Donovan any ill will; in truth, I’ve never even spoken to him, and from what I’ve seen he’s not one of the few ‘bad apples’ of WCG that might deserve a good humbling. I can see why some people might dislike him, given his charmed life backstory. The guy’s a multi-millionaire who wrestles for the thrill of it. And I guess prior to my signing onto West Coast Genesis he was something of a churl, but he’s apparently mellowed recently; understandable, given who he’s dating.”
His oblique compliment to fellow WCG roster member Danni Leblanc made, Tornado gets to his point.
“So, yeah, there is no animosity here. It’s not personal. I’m not Kristian Bane, frothing at the mouth, looking for Donovan Basch’s scalp. We’re fighting June 10 because that’s how Devlin Scott booked the show. Or maybe it’s WCG’s guest GM for the month that made the match, I don’t know. Regardless, I’m in it to earn my first victory in West Coast Genesis and move my way up the card. Donovan Basch just happens to be the obstacle in my way of achieving those goals. A big, dangerous obstacle, guaranteed, and one that is going to give me a tough fight, but I can and will overcome.”
