In the background of a rather tight, New York apartment—how do I know it’s in New York? Have you seen how cramped people are on that tiny little island?! They’re especially cramped in Queens, which is where we find the newest member of the West Coast Genesis roster, Jack Santore. In the background, Jack Santore leans against a couch, he has his cell phone against his hear and at the moment only shrugs and listens. The apartment is filled with boxes, the only things remaining are a TV stand, a TV, the couch and fridge. Everything else is boxed up.
”Yeah, I know. I did tell you that. But I thought we--.”
Jack turns his bods and leans against the back of the couch, facing the camera.
”Babe, I thought you were gonna come out with me! I mean seriously?! It’s three hours before I have to leave for the airport and you’re springing this on me now?!”
Jack sighs heavily. He walks around the couch and plops himself down onto it with another heavy sigh.
”You knew, though! You knew I was headed to California when I told you that I would be moving! I mean, I’m sorry you don’t wanna leave your ma’s house and you’re gonna miss your family, but dammit, I love you!”
Jack stops and listens to the voice on the other side of the phone. He shakes his head in disbelief at whatever is being said to him.
”Really? So now you don’t love me? Last night, we’re hanging out, watching a movie on my couch, “I love you.” But today, now that it’s real and we’re actually supposed to love, “I don’t love you anymore.” I mean, I know you’re scared but—“
Jack again shakes his head in disbelief, now he drops his head back against the couch, the conversation almost exhausting him.
”I would imagine that I won’t be getting paid huge bucks for a while. I mean, I’m new. I’m a damn rookie.”
Jack holds out one hand, palm up, in frustration.
”So is that it? The money is the problem now? You’re a damn school teacher, you can get a job wherever you want. Look, I’m not telling you to support us both. I imagine I’ll be getting paid something. I’m not out there just doing this for a hot dog and a handshake, you know. It’s not all on you.”
Jack now lets his phone fall on his shoulder, trapped between that and his neck. He crosses his arms, becoming increasingly frustrated with the conversation.
”Yes, I’m sure I wanna do this. I was sure when I played football, I was sure when I got into MMA. I’m sure now. I mean, I wouldn’t get this far and not be sure that I wanna move clear across the country and take my girlfriend with me to start a new life, essentially.”
Jack even has to chuckle at whatever was asked. Although, judging by his reaction, it seemed to be about his commitment to joining West Coast Genesis.
”No, honey, I’m not making fun of you. I just can’t believe that—okay, okay, I won’t call you that. Jesus Christ! Look, if you’re done with me then why are still having this conversation then? I mean, I’m—I’m trying to talk you down and calm you down too…No, I do care about you! I wouldn’t be here talking with you if I didn’t care.”
Jack rubs his eyes with his thumb and index finger, pinching at the bridge of his nose.
”So what can I do, then? What can I do make sure you go with me? I mean, I want you there. I want you to come with me, just like we’d planned, you know?”
Jack is quiet for a moment before, putting his head down, resting his elbows on his knees.
”Yeah, I get it. No, I know. I’m sorry. I’m gonna head to the airport then. Take care of yourself, bye.”
Jack taps a button on his phone and drops it on the couch. He wipes his watery eyes and exhales sharply. Jack gets up from the couch, walks over to the door, slings a duffle bag over his shoulder and heads out the door.
