Rebel Ink Tattoo Shop

Caution tape cordoned off the entire sidewalk on the northwest corner of Pine Avenue and Broadway. The once beige-painted exterior was completely blackened, as was the remnants of the shattered sign that had once proudly marked the entrance to the tattoo shop. Fire engines and police cruisers – including two K-9 units swarmed the scene as a reporter with ABC 7 News – a woman with shoulder-length brown hair, clad in a simple red, boat-neck dress – stood a safe distance away with a microphone in her hand.
Reporter: I’m standing outside what used to be the Rebel Ink Tattoo Shop, but as you can see behind me, it has been completely gutted by fire. Surveillance footage released by the Long Beach Police Department has done little to shed light on just what took place several hours after the close of business for the day, but from what we do know, two suspects were seen leaving the area just before the fire broke out. In a moment, we will be speaking with one of the officers called in to investigate this devastating fire.
She took a step to the side as one of the police officers stepped into the frame, a stoic expression on his face.
Reporter: Officer, you’ve been on the scene since the fire marshal deemed it safe to enter the building. What can you tell us about what happened?
Officer: Well, as you stated, the origin of the fire was determined to be in the front of the business. We found some trace amounts of accelerant near the remnants of a broken window, which suggests that something was thrown into the building.
Reporter: Any word on where the owners of the establishment were at the time of the incident?
Officer: Yes... we can confirm that the couple that owned the establishment were out of state at the time.
Reporter: Have you spoken with the owners?
Officer: We tried to get a statement from both of them, but the woman was at a complete loss for words. All she could muster was to question why someone would deliberately set out to destroy their shop. At the very least, the fire department has confirmed that there was no one inside when the fire struck, and there were no injuries apart from minor smoke inhalation to some of the patrons of the neighboring bar.
Reporter: Any idea as to how much damage has been caused as a result of this fire?
Officer: All told, I can’t put a final number, but with all the equipment inside the shop completely destroyed, plus the damage to neighboring establishments, we’re looking at at least a couple million dollars in damages.
Reporter: Well, there you have it... of course we will bring you the latest updates on this situation as they come in. For now, I’m Christina Salvo for Eyewitness News.
