The West Coast Genesis Road Show brings the fresh faced competitors of WCG directly to their fans via live action events as well as a series of interactive fan events. This particular fan event features two of the freshest faces in West Coast Genesis - Tornado Desencadenado and Ruby Rose. The twosome looks more than a little overwhelmed by the turnout, but greet their fans with sincere smiles and engage in some friendly conversation as they alternate between signing various items and taking pictures. At the conclusion of the event, they finally get a chance to breathe. WCG staff bring them each a bottle of water as they are escorted to a lounge area to wait for their scheduled transportation to arrive for them.
Ruby quietly sips her water as she walks off some of the adrenaline still pumping from the high energy interactions she just experienced. She glances over at her fellow coworker and looks to be wracking her brain in an effort to find something to say to him. While she knows who he is and they've interacted a little on Twitter, she doesn't actually know him.
"So, wow. That was a lot of fun. It was my first time ever signing an autograph for someone. Didn't expect there to be too many there."
She laughs nervously and takes another sip of her water for something far less awkward to do.
Tornado nods in agreement, “Yeah, I was really surprised at the turnout. Says a lot about how good WCG is at promotion.”
There was a pause, as the young man considered what he said, and how it could be construed negatively. He hurriedly added a rejoinder to his statement.
“Of course, I mean, the people who came had good reason to come. You’ve really made a name for yourself; when people hear I’m on the Genesis roster you are one of the ones they always ask about, and understandably so. Yeah.”
Distractedly, Tornado reaches to the back of his head to check on the tautness of his man bun.
Ruby glances at Tornado skeptically in response to his quick save. Not that she feels like he was trying to salvage something, she never really took the first comment negatively. Though, she always has trouble believing anytime someone mentions to her anything remotely related to her being noticed.
"The kids really seem to like you. And their mothers…"
She's confused about that for a moment. Wrestling never really seemed like a sport mothers were too enamored with. Of course, her own mother acted like she was going off to join the circus when she first made plans to leave to become a wrestler, so that's an understandable confusion for her to have. Of course, it couldn't possibly be something else about Tornado that has mothers enamored with the whirlwind sensation.
"Hm. Anyway. You had a great turn out. How long have you been wrestling?"
Happy the conversation had moved onto more conventional and well-trod upon ground, Tornado relaxed, and eased back in his seat, before given a well-rehearsed answer, “I started officially training at fifteen, but I’d been messing around with it since I was eleven. My friends and I had our own little backyard fed for a while; then the trampoline broke. How about you?”
"I begged my parents to let me join a wrestling school at sixteen. They weren't too thrilled with the idea, but I guess they thought I would hate it and come home crying, wanting to quit. Did that for about three years before having the nerve to actually apply to a fed. West Coast Genesis is my first."
She shrugs her shoulders, half-heartedly. Her story wasn't the most exciting one on the planet, but it was how her life had gone back home. Nothing there was the most exciting story on the planet. It was why moving to LA at nineteen has been more than a transition for her to adjust to.
Tornado did the mental math and quickly realized how young Ruby actually was, “It’s really impressive that you’re here and competing at such a high level with just three years of experience. I wasn’t anywhere close to ready at your, ah, at your point in life.”
He thought back to when he was nineteen, and the tearful phone call confession he had to make to his family;, that he was facing academic suspension at Ouachita Baptist and that it was highly likely he would lose his scholarship. His failure there and subsequent return home wouldn’t have been the first time his parents had opposed his life-long dream, but it was the certainly the moment where they were most justified in thinking his goal of becoming a pro wrestler was folly. Still, he persevered, and he was curious to see what it was that made Ruby do the same.
“What made you want to become a wrestler?” he asked somewhat bluntly.
"I did a lot of different things growing up. Gymnastics, mostly. But all kind of things. They were all good. It was alright. Kind of wanted more, though. My brothers were always watching wrestling. It just sort of clicked with me one day that I could kind of do everything at once and nobody in my school was even thinking about doing something like this. I liked being different. It was kind of hard to be different and stand out when you saw the same people every day since you were a kid."
She shrugs her shoulders, looking more than a little silly about her answer. Taking a sip of water, she takes a seat on the arm of the couch.
"Fifteen. That was… what? Six years ago?"
Ruby suddenly realizes she doesn't have a clue how old Tornado is. Of course she doesn't. She doesn't know much about him at all. Pegging him at 21, she pries just a little bit further than he's already taken her into his life.
“Oh, no, more like ten,” he confesses with a shrug, “I’m a late bloomer when it comes to wrestling. I did a lot of small, local stuff over the years, but I didn’t sign on with a major promotion until February. That’s why I said I was impressed with you- with what you’ve been able to accomplish so far,” he added hurriedly.
She shrugs her shoulders modestly, doing her best to take the compliment with as much grace as she could possibly muster. The last thing she wanted to do was make Tornado think she was some arrogant rookie looking down on him. Truth was, she looked at him as someone to aspire to be like.
"I've only had a couple of matches and I'm still learning every day. But yeah. It's best to just get out there and see how it goes. I've learn way more in these past few matches than I did in all my training, I think."
With another shrug, she plays it all off like no big deal. After all, to her it was no big deal. She never really saw her career as a big deal to anyone but herself. It always surprised her when people noticed her.
"Honestly, I think you're amazing. Especially having actually wrestled for a few years and still having such a great attitude. I really admire that about you because some people here… well, they're not so nice."
Tornado smiled at Ruby’s compliment. The second part of what the young woman said, though, gave him pause. He agreed with her that on the presence of a few bad apples in West Coast Genesis; but he wasn’t sure how far he wanted to elaborate on that point. He didn’t want to be seen as someone who talked badly about his co-workers behind their backs, or worse, say something unkind about one of the promotion’s wrestlers who was in fact friends with the gregarious blonde. He decided there was one matter that could be addressed without any complications, however, “Well, there’s a few in every locker room, sadly. Like that Aaynet woman; why does she have it in for you so badly?”
Ruby shrugs her shoulders emphatically. Tornado just addressed the elephant in the room that she herself has been avoiding got a long while.
"I wish I knew. Best I can tell, one her clients is nice to me and that bothers her for some reason. Karston and I have been on something of friendly terms since my first night here. I don't know. Maybe she's secretly got the hots for him."
She laughs but you can tell she hasn't completely dismissed the thought as a possible reality.
“Well, I guess there have been stranger things to feud with another wrestler over. And, looking on the bright side it does give your match against her some extra buzz,” the Ring Revolutionary referenced Ruby’s scheduled fight against the Seventh Circle manager at Redemption Wrestling’s upcoming All Female Invitational.
"Yeah, I guess it does."
She nods and shrugs along to that thought, though doesn't look terribly thrilled at the thought of getting in the ring with a woman who seems to despise her so much. Not only does Ruby not truly understand why Aaynet despises her, but she doesn't really know what to expect from her in the ring.
"What about you and Scotty Latimer, though? I mean, he's arrogant, no doubt. He'll tell everybody that he's better than them, but it almost seems like he's singled you out in some fashion. Or maybe because you're the only one who doesn't sit back and just let him run his mouth."
Tornado expression changed to one of mild embarrassment. He rubbed the back of his neck while looking down at the floor distractedly, “Or I’m the only one who rose to his bait. Latimer was trolling, and for the most part I ignored it. Some people, that’s how they want to sell themselves. It’s not my way- honestly I’d prefer not to have to promo at all; just let my in-ring work speak for me- but it’s part of the job. And to a point Latimer had the right to brag. He did beat me at Hype, and earned himself a spot in the next show’s main event. Or ‘semi main’, whatever that means.”
He turns to look up at Ruby, “But I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit quietly while the guy takes shots at me on Twitter. Yeah, Scotty won our match; but he didn’t pin me. If I get my way, he’s going to have to if he wants to continue acting like he’s wrestling royalty here in WCG. My only wish is that we could have the match at the next Hype. I mean, I’m looking forward to facing Donovan Basch; it’s a chance for me to prove myself against someone Devlin Scott thinks is championship material; but I’d be much happier settling the score with Latimer as soon as possible.”
“Speaking of potential champions, congratulations on your title shot,” Tornado said, bringing up the fact Ruby Rose would be one of five wrestlers competing for West Coast Genesis’s second belt, the newly minted South Bay Championship. He smiled broadly at the younger woman.
"Uh, yeah. Thanks."
Ruby accepts the congrats a little awkwardly, brushing some hair behind her ear. She's not sure if she should be thrilled about it in front of a guy she felt probably deserved it more than her, or if she should be disappointed about it for that exact reason. She didn't want Devlin Scott thinking she wasn't appreciative, but she didn't want to rub Tornado's nose in it.
"Not really sure what I did to deserve it, but I'm super grateful. I still think you should have been included, though. I really think that you're amazing. In and out of the ring. I know you don't like the promo thing - and honestly, I don't really get that part too well myself - but you do good stuff. You're genuine. It's a big part of what caught my attention."
“You deserve it. You’re solid in the ring; fast, agile...and you’re conditioning is good. You have as good a chance as any of them to win. And going beyond that, there isn’t many people in West Coast Genesis that better represents what the promotion is about than you. You’re part of the future of the sport; the best part. So yeah, you deserve this chance.”
Tornado paused briefly before addressing his own qualifications for contention, “As for me, I wouldn’t have minded being part of the title match, but I can wait. My time will come, I know it. I really do appreciate the kind words, though. It means a lot.”
"Tell you what. I'm not going to be one of those wrestlers that thinks they win a title and suddenly they call all of the shots. That's totally above my paygrade. However! If, by some miracle, I manage to become the South Bay Champion, I'm gonna at least ask for my first defense to be against you. Because you do deserve it and I'd love to wrestle you."
“Sounds like a plan to me,” the burly wrestler grinned and held out his fist in expectation of ‘sealing the deal’.
Ruby smiles and bumps fists with a little laugh. It looks like she doesn't have much experience with fist bumps, but she gets the meaning behind the gesture.
Ruby quietly sips her water as she walks off some of the adrenaline still pumping from the high energy interactions she just experienced.
