Johnny Maverick had been left in the ring. Right now we find Johnathan Fitzsimmons approaching a small coffee shop in Santa Monica. He knew her actually showing was kind of a long shot but he was pretty thirsty... And hopefully this place was small enough that no one would hear how girly his drink was.
"What do you want, sir?" The barista asks. Johnny mumbles in response.
"Uh...what?" The Barista asks. Johnny rolls his eyes, takes out a sharpie, grabs the Baristas arm, and writes on them. The barista looks at the writing then at Johnny.
"LARGE ICED CHAI LATTE WITH WHIPPED CREAM." The Barista shouts and Johnny groans.
"That just knocked off a Yelp star, I swear to God." Johnny says.
It's not too long after this loud annoucement that there's a little dinging of the bell as the front door swings open. A striking young woman with a soft pale complexion and a constrast of bright pink hair walks into this mom n' pop coffee shop just a few minutes from the Santa Monica Pier. Wearing a frilly pink dress with a creatively torn up blue denim jacket and pink fluffy boots, she lowers her rainbow-heart sunglasses and glances around.
"Hey Danni!" One of the other baristas calls out to her and waves.
The girl named Danni turns her head and offers a giddy smile with a cute little wave. "Hiii!"
"Are you here for your usual? Large iced dark chocolate and vanilla bean coffee with two espresso shots?"
"Mmm, nope! Actually, I'm meeting someone here, sooo I'm going to order my favorite!"
"Ah!" The female barista giggles. "Then I'll make the giant mint chocolate chip frappucino right away!"
"Yay! Thank youuu!" Danni bounces in sheer excitement and turns to see the one customer who is definitely not one of the regulars. "Waaaaait... are youuu...?"
"I uh..." Johnny says. He is breathtaken by the young woman and has to take a moment to clear his throat as his mouth has gone dry. He's wearing a black Misfits t-shirt and a pair of dark blue jeans that were so torn and faded they looked like they'd been through a war. He shifts a bit on his red Chuck Taylor sneakers. Johnny wonders why she doesn't recognize him from his picture then realizes and quickly fumbles to remove his aviator sunglasses.
"Yes. Johnny. Me Johnny. I mean... I'm Johnny. Hi. Danni, right? Hi. I'm Johnny. I said that. So many times. Starting over." Johnny says. He leaves the coffee shop and powerwalks around the entire building.
In the midst of the time when Johnny was walking around outside of the coffee shop, the female barista spoke up. "Oh my! Danni, I think he likes youuu~!"
Danni couldn't help but snort-giggle and shake her head. "No way! He's probably just super awkward when he meets someone new." Danni says right before Johnny re-enters
"Hi! Danni, right? I'm Johnny. This is the first time we're meeting! How fortunate I've not made a terrible first impression." Johnny says, extending his hand for a handshake.
Once Johnny is back inside the shop with a less than strange introduction, Danni turns around to face him with a smile. "You're fine, you're fine!" She gladly takes his hand and gives it a wildly good shake, nice grip. Her hyperness seems beyond natural, but she does politely release his hand and she looks up at him. She's a pretty young thing, cute and petite, barely reaching 5'3" in those fuzzy boots. "Did you order a drink?" She glances back to the baristas. "Did he order a drink?"
"Yes ma'am!" The male barista yells with a smile.
"Oh good! It's on me!" Danni faces Johnny again and beams. "I have a membership here, sooo I get rewards every day I'm here, and I AM here every day!" She grins. "Actually, I have a buy one, get one free drink reward on my card right now!" She claps excitedly.
"No no. Im paying. If I remember correctly your roommate said you're a college student and I'm sort of a..." Johnny says. He stops himself from saying 'millionaire'. He didn't want to seem like a braggart for once in his life. Truth be told it was refreshing to meet up with someone who had no clue who he was or had any idea about his reputation as a wild pansexual party boy. Johnny was actually looking to better himself and for once he was out with a woman he didn't intend to take to bed on the first date.
His pause makes her head tilt, but she doesn't seem to pay too much attention to it.
"I just insist okay?" Johnny says trying to save it with his million dollar smile. The barista puts his drink out.
When he does speak up, she smiles again. "Okay!"
"Ha! I didn't...order this drink with all the whipped cream and uh... Well I suppose I'll take it anyway because I don't want to be a bother." Johnny says unconvincingly.
She's not going to argue about who's buying coffee. That would be silly. Once they're both in front of the counter when his drink is delivered, she giggles. Whether the large iced chai latte with whipped cream really is his drink or not, she offers the male barista and cashier her rewards card to grant the BOGO special. He swipes the card, gives it back to her, and proceeds with the completion of their order. As Johnny pays, the female barista presents to Danni her specialty drink with two cherries added on top of the whipped cream.
"Ohmahgawd thank you so much!" Danni squeals and hops a little before she clears her throat. 'Come on, don't act like a total dweeb! You took your medication! ...At least I think I did. Uh, I might have to ask Mari if I did because I don't really knowww...'
The mental ramblings aside, she takes a sip of her frappucino and smiles. "Do you wanna sit outside? It's a little nicer today than it was yesterday!"
"Sure. It is pretty nice out." Johnny says with a smile.
"So uh... Yeah. I called you adorable on Twitter but... Man. Even more so in person. That was probably too forward. Forget I said it." Johnny says as he leads the way to outside and has a seat at the outside patio area, but not before pulling the seat out for Danni.
"!" But she doesn't forget that he says that. If anything, it only intrigues her more. She catches him pulling the seat out for her before he takes a seat on the opposite side. A hint of a soft hue falls on her cheeks, matching her pink hair, and she decides to take the seat presented to her. She holds her cold drink between her hands and enjoys another sip.
"Are you suuuure you're not just being nice? I mean, I'm kinda sorta weird and I did tell you that I've never been on a date. Not that this is a date! It's not, I don't think? Uh, um." Now it's her turn to be extremely weird towards him. She places her right boot over her left one and anxiously holds her mint chocolate chip frap. "I dunno if I remembered to take my meds, sooo... I'm reallyyyy sorry if I'm extra derpy."
"I did mean it. And well... What's the difference between a date and two people getting coffee, really?" Johnny says with a small nervous chuckle.
"And if you're worried about seeming derpy...think back a few minutes to how I introduced myself. You're fine." Johnny says with a smile.
Danni's taken aback. He's really doing everything in his power to not make her feel super awkward... by being awkward himself. She presses her lips together for a brief moment before she parts her lips and takes a breath.
"You're right, I'm fine. I'm really fine, super fine, fine like wine! I don't even like wine! But I reallyreally love coffee!" She takes a sip of her cold drink and her smile grows. "Mmm, I only order this frappucino on suuuper special occasions, like my birthday, or my baby brother's birthday, or Mari's birthday, or Mother's Day-- ohmygoodness Mother's Day is coming up! Um, I mean, this is a really special occasion because I don't have a lot of friends and I finally made another friend in you! Not that we can't be more than friends--"
She suddenly pauses, her eyes growing wide. Perhaps the caffeine rush is getting to over and she's... literally bouncing in her seat. Her legs can't be still. "I-I-I, uh, I'm sorry. I know you said you just filed for divorce a little bit ago and that's really inconsiderate of me..." And suddenly that rush is stilled for a moment. She lowers her head as a deep red blush crosses her face out of shyness and embarrassment.
"Yeah I don't really... Do Mother's Day." Johnny says quietly. He clears his throat and moves past it.
"Yeah the divorce thing is uh... I'm fine. Really. Hey. You seem really cool but we just met. Tell you what. If by the time you get home you decide you had a good time with me and feel like calling it a date you can text me and we can retroactively decide it was a date." Johnny says with a smile, taking a sip of his iced chai latte.
"I will say though that if anyone were to look at us right now and think we were on a date? I'd feel like quite a guy if people thought I could score a date with a cute girl like you." Johnny says, a little nervously as he takes another sip.
She's taken back by his twist of awkwardness yet sweetness. She can tell he's trying to get through this conversation without making things worse for either of them. Perhaps it's because she's never seen or heard of him before, but she's perceiving him as kind and genuine. That's all that matters to her. A bright blush paints across her cheeks and yet she finds herself smiling.
"Well I... I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens, right? I'm happy that I'm getting to know you, Johnny. I really am. Outside of a few friends, I've never really done this with anyone before. Coffee with someone who actually wants to be my friend... it's nice." She offers him a cute little smile that reveals her adorable dimples.
She takes off the top of the drink and picks up the twin cherries in between her finger and thumb. She gently pinches the stems and she glances towards his drink. "Oh! They didn't give you a cherry? Here, you can have mine! Take my cherry." Maybe it's her naivety, maybe it's her youthfulness, but... There are different ways to take her words in that moment and she doesn't realize that.
Johnny was taking a sip when Danni made her kind offer and accidentally inhaled his beverage down the wrong hole. He coughs violently for a few moments, the dirty half of his mind betraying him.
"I.. -cough cough- Uh... Right. Your cherry. I mean...sure. Thanks." Johnny says. He reaches out and takes the cherry but due to an awkward spasm he crushes it on accident.
"Oh shit I popped your che....nnnnnnnnnnnnope. Backing out of that sentence." Johnny says.
"?" And despite the exchange between them just now, Danni is completely and utterly oblivious to Johnny's strange behavior. She watches the juices of the popped cherry drip down his hand and she's quick to offer him a couple napkins. "Here, here!"
Once he takes them from her, she tilts her head in confusion. "Are you okay?" She pops out of her seat, walks around the table, and gently pats him on the back. Even though he's not coughing anymore, she just wants to make sure, her genuine concern for him presented nicely. "I've done that a few times before. Hot coffee going down the wrong pipe, popping a cherry or two... It kinda sucks!" She has no idea.
"Nope. Not fair." Johnny says, silently cursing a deity he didn't believe in for the sea of innuendo he had been cast into without a paddle before looking up at her face. He needs a distraction. He dips his finger in his whipped cream and boops her on the nose.
"Boop." He says.
"Ah!"
It's a delayed reaction, the booping of her nose and the whipped cream on top. She doesn't know what he means when he says "not fair", but this new situation has distracted her enough to forget about it. "Heyyy, I was trying to help you!" She cutely pouts, walks around back to her drink, and she takes the other cherry. When she returns to his side, she brings the cherry up and holds it between her fingertip and his lips.
"Boop." She chimes.
"You've been put here to test me. Who put you up to it? Was it Xaria? Is she lurking with a camera right now? Are you in league with the illuminati? " Johnny says. With his mouth open due to his nervous yammering, Danni pops the fruit in his mouth and Johnny 'takes her cherry'.
She smiles in kind, showing off her cute dimples, and she takes a step back. "See? Doesn't that make you feel better?" Satisfied, she walks back to her seat, sits down, and enjoys a couple more sips of her frap.
"I dunno what you're talking about. I don't even know who Xaria is and why she would put me up to this. This isn't a test. This is a very real, very nice coffee date, right?" Upon saying this, she blushes again and tries to distract herself by indulging her drink.
"Yeah. It is very real and very nice." Johnny says with a smile. Despite all the awkwardness he really was having a good time. Her innocence was a breath of fresh air...
"Wait...you said date." He adds after another sip of his drink.
She hoped he didn't notice. She really, really hoped... but he did. She takes a long slurp of her drink, but the brain freeze causes her to wince and whimper. Immediately she sets her frappucino down on the table and she cradles her head in her left hand.
"Owowowowowow... ow. Yes... I said date. I guess I liked our first meeting so much that I'm calling it my first-ever date. I-is that okay?"
Danni flinches, the brain freeze still overtaking her as she lightly massages her temples with her free hand. She tries not to make eye contact, too shy to look at him in her weak moment.
Johnny reaches across the table and puts his fingers on her temples. He rubs counterclockwise and soon his 'Mavgic' fingers have freed her of her brain freeze. It was in that moment Johnny realized how intimate the moment was and how close their faces were. He tries to think of a way to back out of this smoothly but he's drawing a complete blank.
She lifts her head up, the gentleness of him rubbing her temples taking her by surprise, but she doesn't pull away. If anything, their eyes lock in the sweet moment and she feels her blush spreading across her face. It's quite the contrast to her creamy pale skin and better matches with her pink hair. When she realizes that he's frozen, she decides to do something. She takes his hand in hers and gives it a gentle squeeze. Despite her shyness, she offers him a sweet little smile.
Johnny bites his lip for a moment and leans in slightly. He kisses her... On the cheek.
His lips make contact with her cheek and her blush grows furious from her body heat. Her first kiss. It may not be considered a "real" kiss, but to her it means so much in the moment...
That moment is taken away when his phone's alarm goes off and she begins to shake it off.
"Hm. Oh geeze. In an hour I need to be at my gym to see some new potential students. But...I can walk you home?" Johnny says, asking her permission.
He has to go already? A sad little frown crosses her face, but she tries to turn it upside down with joy and warmth. "O-okay. I'd like that!" She slowly rises to her feet, taking her drink in one hand while the other is still... holding his.
If this were any other girl he'd use her hand to pull him against his body and make out with her. Then probably walk her home and go up to her room with her...but instead he grabs his drink and they walk off together, hand-in-hand. He lets her lead the way.
"What do you want, sir?" The barista asks. Johnny mumbles in response.
"Uh...what?" The Barista asks. Johnny rolls his eyes, takes out a sharpie, grabs the Baristas arm, and writes on them. The barista looks at the writing then at Johnny.
