“Zero For Two”
Date: May 8, 2017
Elise DiMaria just sighed and shook her head in shame as she stands outside of a door located in her San Diego home. That’s because from behind the door, she’s hearing her daughter, Julianna, having a tantrum from behind the closed door. The sounds of books colliding with the floor, large objects being toppled over and closet doors being slammed shut are heard.
Mrs. DiMaria: Where did I go wrong?
She sighs and shakes her head as she covers her face in shame with one of her hands. She raises her eyebrows once she hears Julianna screaming some foul language in German right when her father walks into the scene to join her mother. He too, is taken aback by what he’s hearing.
Mr. DiMaria: How bad is it?
Mrs. DiMaria: On the Richter scale? 7.5.
Mr. DiMaria: How would you know that?
Mrs. DiMaria: Vincenzo, I’m the one that speaks German. Do you really want to know the words that are coming out of your daughter’s mouth right now?
Mr. DiMaria: Man, she’s really taking her shortcomings personally, isn’t she?
Mrs. DiMaria: She still has so much to learn. Mind taking care of this for me? I have somewhere to be in a half hour.
Mr. DiMaria: I’ll give it my best. I’ll be able to get through to her, no worries.
Mrs. DiMaria: Thanks.
Mrs. DiMaria turns and walks down the hallway, leaving her husband to deal with Julianna himself. He takes a deep breath and knocks on the door as polite and as calm as he can.
Julianna (from inside): GO AWAY!!!!
Mr. DiMaria: It’s me, sweetheart. Open up.
Julianna (from inside): NO!!!
Mr. DiMaria: Jeez, Jules, you’re acting like it’s the end of the world.
Julianna (from inside): It IS the end of the world!!!!
Mr. DiMaria: Look, be a grown woman over this, alright? Now open up! NOW!!!!
The raised, directive tone in the Italian’s voice is enough to quell the tension as the noise suddenly dissipates. Footsteps are heard until they give way to the sound of the door being unlocked. The door opens and Julianna is seen with an angry, annoyed look on her face.
Julianna: What?!?!?!
Mr. DiMaria: Sweetheart, we should talk.
Julianna: Oh is this the part where daddy is going to sugar coat everything just so his little girl can feel better? Aw!!! I’m not a child anymore, okay?
Mr. DiMaria: So quit acting like one and for god’s sake…
Vicenzo is able to take a look around the bedroom seeing that books are all over the floor, clothes are scattered everywhere, the bed is completely disorganized, and a jar of Lindor truffles is broken in two with the chocolates themselves everywhere.
Mr. DiMaria: Ya really don’t like losing, do ya?
Julianna: No, because you and mother taught me and trained me how to be a winner! I’m not supposed to LOSE! Okay, lose the ladder match at Origins? FINE! It’s a ladder match. It’s more of a luck of the draw than people actually think it is. But to LOSE the SECOND time? UGH!!!! Dad, this is such a NIGHTMARE! You know what the worst part is? I’m in the back of the line now! How am I going to get another chance? What the hell do I do now?
Mr. DiMaria: It’s all about experience and time. Anyway, I’ll see you downstairs because I’m not talking to you in there when that room is in the damn shape it’s in. Would it hurt ya if ya had some respect for this house while you’re still here? I know you wanna move out soon, but holy crap!
Julianna: Fine!
Julianna rolls her eyes as she leaves the room to follow her father down the hallway and eventually downstairs to the living room. Julianna sits down on a couch and folds her arms, indicating that she wants absolutely nothing to do with her father at the moment. She expresses this as well with an annoyed pout and narrowed eyes as her father sits on another couch across from her.
Mr. DiMaria: Like I was saying… all about experience and time.
Julianna squints her eyes in annoyance.
Mr. DiMaria: What? You can’t handle that? That’s the truth.
Julianna: I’m so tired of it though. I don’t understand! I have everything in the world to succeed! I have everything it takes to be a mainstream star! I have all the potential in the world to make this MY world and to reign in it for the next decade to come and yet, I’ve had two cracks to make it happen and I’ve come up empty both times? Do you understand how much that hurts? Yeah, you do. Save it. But it is so frustrating when you’re being held back by youth and inexperience! If it wasn’t for those two things, I’d be golden! If I was a five year veteran, I would be the West Coast Champion right now!
Mr. DiMaria: No you wouldn’t!
Julianna: DAD!
Mr. DiMaria: If you were a five year vet, you’d be on the Redemption roster. I get your point though. You’re frustrated because ya feel like youth and inexperience is preventin ya from getting to where ya want to be. That’s fair. It’s no reason for ya to tear up your room, but I understand. And you’re right, that’s holding ya back! But sweetheart, ya need to understand that it’s not the ONLY thing holding ya back!
Julianna: So, what else is holding me back Oh Wise and Knowledgeable Seer!
Mr. DiMaria: Did ya listen to a damn thing Ryan Keys said to you?
Julianna: It was a bunch of nonsense, dad!
Mr. DiMaria: Actually, he made a good point. You’re far too distant from everyone else. You’re focused too much inward and not outward, ya know? If ya want to make WCG “your world”, ya got to know the people you’ll be “ruling” over, ya get what I’m saying?
Julianna: What are you saying? You want me to be just like everyone else in the locker room? “Oh hi, I’m Ruby Rose, a ditzy blonde rookie with so much drama behind me”. “Oh hi, I’m Danni LeBlanc, let me show you how big my ass is and show off my roided up, pussy whipped boyfriend!” No dad, I’m not reducing myself to women like them.
Mr. DiMaria: I’m not saying to BE them, I’m just saying to KNOW them. I’m not even tellin’ ya to be their friend. What I’m saying is, ya gotta know what they’re about if ya want to overcome them. It doesn’t even matter how prodigal you are, Jules, one of the most important things in this business is to know your opponents because if ya don’t, well… I hate to rub it in but what happened to you two days ago is going to be a common theme for ya as ya go along in your career. It’s like they used to tell me back in Italy: know your friends well, but know your enemies even better! Ya never really invested in studyin’ your opponents when you were in the Indy scene.
Julianna: No, because I went in there, knowing I could beat every single one of them.
Mr. DiMaria: But you’re not going to get away with that in the mainstream.
Julianna sighs, again, not knowing what to make of the conversation. She stands up from the couch she was sitting on, still with her arms folded. She looks down on the ground as she ruminates about the situation that she finds herself in. The pout is still on her face as the young rookie is still very much in stubborn denial over the fact that things aren’t coming to her as quickly as she was hoping they would.
Mr. DiMaria: Jules?
Julianna feels a bit of an odd sensation coming to the front of her head and as a result, she closes her eyes, squinting them as hard as she can.
Mr. DiMaria: Sweetheart?
Julianna covers her face with one of her hands, but her father sees a tear strolling down her face which causes him to stand up.
Mr. DiMaria: Look, that’s the way it is.
Julianna: I know…
She wipes away a tear before she continues.
Julianna: ...I didn’t know this was going to be so hard!
Mr. DiMaria: It’s hard, but not as hard as you’re making it out to be.
Julianna: Yeah? You and mother are talking to me about what you all did for me to make this possible for me and I’m trying to do the best I can to live up to all that and to live up to everything you two expect out of me and having two cracks at what I wanted and coming up short both times ISN’T doing that! There’s all this pressure on me to live up to what YOU want from me and all this lecturing just feels like I’m so far behind what you and mother want me to be!
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah, you’re overthinking it. First off, the only thing we expect out of ya is to make your living and be happy doing it. We’re not asking ya to become a 50 time world champion and to break all sorts of records. You’re not letting us down by losing. Now, I ain’t gonna bullshit with ya, you do let us down with the way you react to losin’, because your mother and I raised ya better than that. Losing isn’t a setback, losing is an experience to learn from. Yeah, we want ya to make us proud, but givin’ it your best shot whether ya win or lose is all ya gotta do to make that happen. Are we clear on that?
Julianna looks up at her father, some tears still in her eyes. She wipes them away and nods.
Julianna: Yeah. We’re clear.
Mr. DiMaria: Do you promise me you’re going to stop throwin’ tantrums over losses and acting like it’s the end of the world?
Julianna nods again.
Julianna: I promise and I’m sorry for acting like such a child.
Mr. DiMaria: Now, like I was sayin’... ya wanna break through? Get to know your friends. Get to know your enemies. From this point forward, you’re goin’ to put a better effort on doin’ that. Can you do that for me?
Julianna: Yeah, I can.
Mr. DiMaria: I promise you, with this extra effort, you’ll earn what ya want! Now, I got another favor to ask of you. I want you to stop by the facility on Saturday.
Julianna: For what?
Mr. DiMaria: I noticed that your next match is a tag team match. All I’m going to say about that is that you’re in for a surprise… and I guess a little more training. Can I trust ya to be there on Saturday?
Julianna: Yeah, you can. Thanks. You know that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get better!
Mr. DiMaria: And that’s all we ask of ya. See? Nothin’ complicated!
Julianna walks up to her father and opens up a bit, giving him a hug that he wastes no time returning.
Julianna: Thanks for making that clear. I don’t feel that much pressure anymore.
Mr. DiMaria: Good! By the way, ya might wanna get started on that room.
Julianna: I probably should, shouldn’t I?
Julianna is able to chuckle a bit, now feeling better, as she goes upstairs to fix the room she had destroyed in rage over her loss to Ryan Keys. Her father sits down on the couch, taking a big sigh of relief.
Mr. DiMaria: Jules is gonna be alright! She’s gettin’ it and it’s only a matter of time before she breaks through.
Vincenzo DiMaria stands up, pulling out a cigarette from his pocket. He decides to step out and have a quick smoke break to himself feeling more confident than before in Julianna’s bright future in the wrestling business.
TBC!
