“My eternal friend...my eternal friend…”
This was a rare moment for anyone who watches Adrien Cochrane speak about his matches. They have a variety of locations such as outside his house, the city he is wrestling in, usually some sort of historical landmark. He’s done warehouses and other empty rooms, But this time is different. The couch he is sitting on is his own. The coffee table that is sitting in front of him is also his, along with the mug containing a cup of earl grey tea. The muted television is barely in the shot on the left hand side, playing the second volume of the Marvel film, the Guardians of the Galaxy. On the opposite end of the camera’s view, is a championship belt Adrien Cochrane never lost, hanging on the wall: the THW International Championship.
“These are strange circumstances because I normally have a general idea of who my opponent is before I begin speaking about my match. Almost no one knows who El Leon Azul is. I can tell you that his name in English translated to the Blue Lion. He wrestled in Mexico prior to coming to NGW. He’s had a damn good run so far here as well: only one loss to five victories. He’s fairly small, but so are a lot of wrestlers nowadays. Hell, I’m not exactly above the two hundred mark myself.
“But...I feel like there’s more to the story. I feel like there is an entire book about this, and I’m only looking at a single chapter. It’s as if I only am getting part of the picture here and not seeing what was cropped out.”
Cochrane closes his eyes for a moment before he repeats the words from El Leon Azul’s tweet to him about five days ago. He says it in Spanish, a language that he isn’t fluent in but at least passable.
“Eres un amigo eterno.”
He looks back at the camera after taking a deep breath.
“It means ‘You are my eternal friend.’ And...I just don’t see that being something someone says to a stranger. And it’s bugging me. Puzzles like this...I have this compulsion to finish them. Even before he told me that, he told me ‘Eres un hijo de la luz.’, calling me the son of light. Telling me that I will be greatly rewarded for my actions.
“These aren’t the words that someone just says to another wrestler on the roster with him. It leads me to believe that El Leon Azul knows me a lot more than I know him. And sure, that’s probably true for almost the entire roster. El Leon Azul is an enigma. Probably intentionally. I don’t think he wants any of us to know who he is in the first place, and he’s done well to make sure none of us do.”
Adrien lifts up a folder from his coffee table for emphasis on his next point.
“I got this from Eddie a few hours ago when I had dinner with him in New Orleans. In terms of information to figure out who El Leon Azul is? Nothing. Zilch. Nada. No lo entiendo.”
After a shrug of the shoulders, Adrien places the folder back on the table. He’s still wearing the same Mumford and Sons t-shirt he was wearing when he was eating with Eddie Walker and Jaime Alejandro a few hours earlier, paired up with the same jeans he was wearing as well. His necklace was still around his neck. The Dropkick King runs his hands through his blonde hair before letting out a sigh.
“Perhaps I should be focused on actually wrestling the masked competitor rather than trying to connect the dots. Instead of trying my best to impersonate Charlie Kelly from that meme that’s circulated the internet this year, I should treat El Leon Azul like I have every other opponent. And regardless of who El Leon Azul is behind the mask, the one thing we absolutely know for sure about the youngster is that he will be stepping into the ring with me in Columbus, Ohio in…”
Cochrane quickly raises his wrist to allow his Apple Watch to illuminate, showing him the date and time.
“Ah, guess it’s past midnight. That will mean the match is in eleven days now. But regardless of who you are, El Leon Azul, I don’t take any match lightly. You’ve been on an incredible run as of late. Winning five out of six matches is not an easy task. I commend you highly for that feat. You should be proud of being able to accomplish that. And it’s not like you were beating scrubs either: Joshua Goldstein, Coral Rose, and even a disqualification win over Kayla Richards...these are big names you have defeated.
“And I am going to assume that you are hoping to add my name to that list. You wouldn’t be doing this if you weren’t. We always want to test ourselves against the best we absolutely can. And right now, you’re the one with the eighty-three percent batting average. And I’m sure you’re looking at me as the three-time World Heavyweight Champion that’s trying to make it four in July. We wanted strong opponents...we got strong opponents, right?”
For the first time in the entire video, Adrien Cochrane begins to smile. The utter confusion of who El Leon Azul is not Adrien’s wheelhouse. Talking about the pure battle in the ring that’s going to take place was a topic Adrien was much more at home talking about. Which was strange considering he was literally sitting in his living room…
“Maybe one day, I’ll know the man behind the mask. But I’m on a mission. I have two matches before the big one. And I need to make sure it is absolutely clear that I belong in that main event for WrestleForce. I need to win this match. This is a bigger deal to me than most people would have thought. But this is about setting the bar for myself. If I want to be champion, then I need to be at my best at all times. I need to be better than I was the day before. And that means not losing, El Leon Azul. I respect you as much as I could possibly respect someone who I don’t know a whole lot about. I appreciate your words of kindness. I think you’re going to do some great things. But I need this win, Azul. And I believe that I can pull this off. And nothing is more dangerous than me when I begin to believe.”
Say something, say something
Something like you love me
Less you wanna move away
From the noise of this place
Well I don't even know if I believe
I don't even know if I believe
I don't even know if I wanna believe
Anything you're trying to say to me

So, open up my eyes
Tell me I'm alive
This is never gonna go our way
If I'm gonna have to guess what's on your mind
