“Adam? I didn’t think you were coming.”
Adrien Cochrane’s voice sounds as surprised as Kenzie Rydell’s and Adam Sanders’s voice was.
Adrien: “I would have warned you if I knew Kenzie was coming. This is the first time you’ve been in the same room since the…”
Adam: “...Yes.”
Kenzie: “We know, Adrien.”
At this point, Adrien could feel the tension in the room. The hairs on his neck were starting to stand and he wasn’t even the one in the relationship between these two.
Adrien: “Right. Wow, six months. Umm...should I give you two a minute or…?”
Kenzie glances at Adam to see his response. Adam was still frozen at the entrance.
Kenzie: “Please. If you don’t mind?”
Adrien grabs his coffee mug containing the cup of earl grey tea that he brewed earlier in the morning before slowly walking back upstairs. On his way up, the two could hear him mumble one last sentence.
Adrien: “I’m being kicked out of my own living room…”
The brunette’s attention quickly points towards the man she used to date.
Kenzie: “... How are you?”
Adam: “I’m alive.”
Kenzie: “I can see that. I meant... How are you?”
Adam was unsure how to answer that question. He, as he usually is, was a mixed bag of emotions at this particular point in time. He gives a different evasive answer.
Adam: “I’m making it.”
With a flip of the hair, Kenzie tries to keep her composure. It didn’t work.
Kenzie: “See, this is why we didn’t work out.”
Adam’s eyes widened a little bit at Kenzie’s harsh response. He isn’t exactly sure how to react to it.
Kenzie: “I’m sorry, I just… I just want you to speak your mind, that’s all. I want you to be comfortable expressing yourself. Even if it’s not with me.”
Adam: “Well, I got my heart broken at the beginning of the month and now I’m about to try to go after a title for the third time after failing the first two times. Happy?”
Adam quickly responds but returns to a more passive facial expression once he got that out of his system. He takes a seat where Adrien was previously sitting, but Kenzie has yet to sit back down.
Kenzie: “No… No, I’m not happy. I want the best for you. I hope you can find someone who makes you more comfortable than you were with me. I want you to win that championship.”
Adam: “Why does it matter to you?”
Kenzie was taken aback.
Kenzie: “I don’t know. It just does. I don’t know how to explain it. I just want you to be happy.”
Adam: “I was happy with you.”
Kenzie was silent. She took a seat once her ankle was starting to bother her after standing for so long.
Adam: “I’m sorry that I don’t have the necessary skills to express myself all that well. It’s why Eddie still does my promo videos for me. But it wasn’t going to magically happen just because you broke up with me or I somehow win this title. It’s not going to suddenly solve anything. All it did was make me feel like I wasn’t good enough.”
Kenzie: “Of course you were good enough, Adam. Maybe I wasn’t good enough.”
Adam: “You were perfect in my eyes. Way too good for me.”
Kenzie: “I’m not perfect. Me breaking up with you because we couldn’t get on the same wavelength proves it. Me breaking up with you because I couldn’t get past this stupid selfish need to try and help you get more confident proves that. I couldn’t just let you be you, and I couldn’t handle it.”
Adam: “I’m glad that your whole thing has become about being more confident. But don’t you think that had nothing to do with a two-year relationship? Couldn’t the things just be separate from one another? And why is it that the thing you decided was best for me to become this super confident Adam was to leave me...when you knew how much you meant to me?”
Kenzie: “Nothing is going to take away from the two years we had with each other, alright? Nothing that happened after the breakup is ever going to change the fact that there’s a part of me that still loves you.”
Adam: “And I still love you, after six months. And believe me, I’ve tried…”
Adam runs his hands through his hair, sighing.
Adam: “I know that sounds bad to say. But during the first month, I thought it would hurt less if I didn't love you anymore. I’m sorry, but in the end, I still do. I apparently have no choice in the matter.”
Kenzie: “Listen… We can’t help the way we feel. You don’t need to apologize. We’re two different people. It took us two years to figure it out but I wouldn’t trade any of them for the world.”
She shook her head.
Kenzie: “I understand you’re the way you are and nothing I could have done could have changed it. I know that no matter how many times I told you that everything was okay and that you didn’t need to apologize, it was always going to happen again. I know that no matter how many times I had confidence that you could do your own promos, you would always have Eddie do them for you and maybe I’m a bad person for wanting to help but every time nothing I told you stuck, it hurt me inside. You couldn’t realize how incredible you were in my eyes and you would always be incredible. You couldn’t realize you were always stronger than you knew and every time you went against what I told you when I was just trying to help, I felt like I was more useless by the day. I felt like if I couldn’t make you open up more, if I couldn’t even make you relaxed around me enough to express the things you were feeling, then I needed to leave… Does that make sense at all to you?”
Adam doesn’t want to say anything but he nods his head. He doesn’t agree with it, but he will acknowledge her point of view isn’t invalid.
Adam: “I just feel like if that was a conclusion you were going to come to, you would have done so a lot earlier.”
Kenzie: “I tried so hard, Adam. I tried to ignore the feelings I had but then I found the engagement ring you left at our apartment.”
Adam: “I mean, I would have warned you I got that, but I feel like that would have defeated the purpose…”
Kenzie gave him a slightly frustrated look.
Kenzie: “That’s not what I meant, Adam. I saw you wanted to spend the rest of our lives together and I just didn’t think I could spend my entire life trying to tell you that it was okay not to say you were sorry. I didn’t think I could spend all that time feeling like I was useless. I’m sorry...”
Adam: “I mean, I want to say I’m sorry back, but I got to a point where I have an aversion saying them to you. Because being sympathetic or apologetic was something different to you than it was to me.”
Kenzie: “It’s okay, Adam. Everything is going to be okay.”
Just then, Kenzie reverted back to the Kenzie Adam knew back when they were dating if only for a short moment. It was at that moment, the owner of the house pokes his head back from the stairwell.
Adrien: “Is it safe to come back out yet or are you two still squabbling?”
Adam isn’t sure, to be perfectly honest. But Kenzie was the one who responds.
Kenzie: “Yeah, I… I think there’s nothing left to say right now. Adam?”
Adam: “I’m fine.”
The three-time World Heavyweight Champion takes a few more steps down the stairs, mug full of earl grey still in his hand.
Adrien: “You sure?”
Adam: “Yes.”
Adrien: “Alright then. I...was thinking maybe you could stick around for New Years like we used to have around here back in the day. Like last year. If you want to, I mean…”
Kenzie: “Thank you so much but I don’t think that would be the best idea right now. I’ll see you guys later, okay?”
Kenzie doesn’t seem as chipper as she was moments ago as she looks back at Adam one last time before she limps back out of Adrien’s house. Adrien wanted to say something, but he just couldn’t do it. He didn’t want to force her back into an uncomfortable position for her.
Adam: “I’m really sorry, Adrien. I came over to make sure you were okay because…”
Adrien places a hand on Adam’s shoulder.
Adrien: “Don’t worry about it. It is what it is. I appreciate you coming out here to check on me.”
Adam still visibly shaken by all the emotions that were let out in the conversation he had with Kenzie looks back up at Adrien.
Adam: “I owe you a lot for everything you’ve done for me, Adrien. I do. And I want to do anything I can for you. But at the moment...I think I need to head back home. I’m really sorry.”
Adrien glances down at his feet for a moment.
Adrien: “Yeah, I understand, kid. A lot of memories rushing to your head right now, I can only assume.”
Adam doesn’t respond. He doesn’t even nod. But the look in his eyes told Adrien everything he needed to know.
Adrien: “Hey, listen to me before you go. You are capable of being champion. You’ve gotten that victory over Shawn before. You can do it again. Got me?”
A weak nod from the Awkward One.
Adrien: “Look after yourself, okay? Good luck.”
After Adam closes the door behind him, Adrien slumps back into his seat once more, taking the final gulp of his tea.
Adrien: “Well, here we are again. Alone in a big empty house. Hey, Siri…”
Double deeps from his phone, which he had fetched while he was upstairs.
Adrien: “Play New Found Glory for me. At least it will be better than silence…”

You contradict the fact that you still want me around
