"I wish you to understand something rudimentary important."
Once the YouTube video began, Coda's words were as sharp and precise as the needles that break the skin to retrieve blood from your veins. She stands in the dark confines of a closet with a cold steel stare towards the camera, watching as a yellowing lightbulb sways back and forth behind her.
"You must understand that labels are meaningless."
You remembered a similar scene when you saw Coda for the first time. The dust that trickled upwards towards her unflinching features looked the same, drenched in a yellow glow from the light of the slowly dying bulb. Wordlessly fixing the collar of her dress shirt, she continued to speak again once it was to her liking.
"Redemption Wrestling's booking team did not understand this when advertising my upcoming match as a war between monsters. Diem Masters did not understand this either. It is a shame. She seems so smart otherwise, however she fails to see the truth in front of her eyes."
Swallowing a drip of saliva that fell to the back of her throat, she kept talking to you through the monitor with a chilling methodic tone in everything she did.
"Nothing is wrong with marketing. I understand it is easier to explain this match as a fight between people of somewhat similar mindsets, however, Diem Masters has no excuse. You see, as Corey Bull's wife — whether she is a girlfriend or a wife does not concern me as I do not particularly care to pry into other people's personal lives too much — you would have thought she would see Corey Bull as the man behind the mystique. You would assume the two talk constantly when the lights are dulled and sleep is soon to come. And yet do you know how Diem refers to him?"
A faint air of disgust covers her face as she opens the door and leaves the closet. Walking into the bedroom she called her own, the camera caught a couple posters of several KPOP idols standing in a row. A desktop computer was tucked away in the corner, antiquated in appearance yet fully functional. It wasn't flat like the newer models, no. It was a large white brick perched onto a desk with a matching white keyboard and mouse combination in front of it. A simple computer chair rested in front of it, resting calmly as Coda walked passed, her fingertips trailing the top of the soft material as the well-lit lights hit her porcelain complexion.
"She calls Corey Bull her love, her monster, her god..."
The words are spoken with disdain.
"Corey Bull is not a mythical creature who terrorizes Tokyo with a mere flick of the wrist. Corey Bull is not an equally mythical creature who stands just out of sight, invisible to the naked eye and powerful beyond human comprehension. No. He is none of those things. He is a man. He is a man as I am a woman. He is a talented fighter in the ring, a man who demands respect in everything he does, however, being talented does not a god make."
Sitting down in her computer chair, she allows her fingertips to feel the soft felt as she continues. Coda's eyes have a hard time focusing on the lens, and yet she is as focused as she's ever been.
"Perhaps I have understated the success Corey Bull has accomplished over the countless years he has competed in the ring. He has destroyed many a man in countless different ways, and yet nothing dictates he is any more a god than Anton Chase. I am sure you all saw what happened to him, yes? I made him bleed. I systematically destroyed all doubts that he was anything more than another human male with a misguided superiority complex."
Smirking ever so softly, she spoke again with intensity.
"I was unaware a 'god' could be so weak. Let us see how the second 'god' will fare."
She chuckled chillingly at the thought, gripping the armrest absent-mindedly as she did so.
"It is rather disappointing, Corey. You have the potential to be so much greater and yet to pretend to be an imaginary creature. It is the same as me attempting to become a unicorn. It would not accomplish anything, and everyone would know that I was still human. So why do you continue? Why do you continue to make a mockery of every accomplishment you have ever made?"
Rising from her seat, she slowly walked towards her large bed like she were floating on air and sat down on the edge, folding her hands in her lap like she was in school.
"This is the difference between you and I. You romanticize our state of mind. You pretend that it is what you need to do in order to get recognized. You make it appear like it is 'cool' to have a mental illness, to endlessly want to quench your thirst for violence, to always feel like you are an outsider, but I have no choice in the matter. It is no act. I am how I am and it is how it is."
Coda looked down, showing only a hint of vulnerability for a brief fraction of a second.
"The Joker is not a role model. Harley Quinn's abusive relationship with The Joker is not something to be admired and replicated. We fetishize and laugh at the word 'crazy' in a way that demeans the word and people like Corey Bull capitalize on this thought process. It is simply my opinion. I could be incorrect. However, from my experience, this is how I see things."
Laying down on the bed, she continues to face the camera as she rests the side of her head on the pillow.
"I am Coda. What you see is what you get. I mean what I say and I say what I mean, I do not walk around the subject like so many others do in this day and age. Corey Bull is the opposite."
Rolling to the other side, she slowly pops up on the other side and walks towards the closet again.
"He plays mind games with people, toying with emotions and hoping you find meaning in the meaningless. I would much rather get to the point and tell you what I intend to do instead of using flowery words to get my point across."
She gestured towards the closet.
"When I appeared in the closet the first time I made a video before my acclaimed Redemption Wrestling debut, I did so out of satire. So many record promotional videos in dark rooms with swinging light bulbs speaking nonsensically into the camera like it is what is expected of them. It is childish, to fall back on these tired cliches. I, however, will tell you in simple to follow words that I will knock you senseless and defeat you without the need to act irrevocably stupid in the process."
Coda opened the closet door once again, standing in the light as the broody lightbulb continued to sway.
"I am no god. I am no knight. I am no monster. I am who I am."
With a light push, the door squeaked obnoxiously as it slowly began to close. With a click, the lightbulb was hidden from the camera with ease.
"I will say that Damage Inc. intrigues me. I may not share the same feelings as you do concerning every person you have chosen to target, however, I enjoy watching the carnage from where I stand. I could even say that I enjoy the matches Corey Bull and Gray Malone have participated in as long as I have been paying attention. The two are talented, and anyone dumb enough to discount the group is more mindless than Anton Chase."
"I have taken the liberty to assure that Matthew Shields makes sure Gray Malone does not interfere in any way during our match. Should Gray Malone ruin the contest, I assure you that steps will be taken to achieve retribution."
"I do not do this out of spite, I do this because I have the utmost respect for you, Corey. As I have said, I have watched you wrestle for a long time. I am aware of the legacy you have achieved despite the shortcomings. This is why I want to fight you one on one. I wish this to be a test — the biggest test I have faced thus far in Redemption Wrestling. I wish to see what it is like to stare the 'monster' in the eye and feel the full effects of its dominance in the ring. I wish to know what it is like to face real competition the likes of which I have not had since signing with the company. I wish to know what it is like to conquer said monster — just as The Young Cubs have done — and what it is like to make another 'god' fall back down to Earth."
Smirking subtly at the thought of it, Coda walked back towards the center of her bedroom..
"You might say that it is not so easy. You might say it takes a monster to beat a monster, a god to take down a god but that is untrue. I will beat him as a human. I will destroy every fabricated story he has ever told by humiliating him on a grand stage, and I will not stop until the Redemption Wrestling booking team, Diem Masters, and everyone else have no other choice but to see a man when they look at him — a man not even strong enough to defeat me."
"The second 'god' will fall and I will rise in its place stronger than before."
"It is not out of disrespect, Corey Bull. It is what must be done."
The video came to a close, fading to black.
