“Chocolate milk and pickles. What a combination.”
Avery Miles III hops in his truck and heads down the long driveway. Passing the tall trees near the dirt road where it meets the driveway, he turns his headlights on and heads towards town. Being far out in the country did have its cons; it took fifteen to twenty minutes to get to the nearest town, Macon. Dry Branch was not much, but it was definitely home. Heading to the gas station, he would grab a few things to snack on. He flipped the radio on and listened to a playlist as he barrelled down the road. Dirt flying up all behind him, but he knew the road like it was his own personal travel paths. As he turned onto the state highway that led into Macon, the music continued to play. He cracked his window to get some fresh air and enjoyed the drive. Soon his time would be filled with two little ones, crying and wanting attention. He was excited and happy for that. It was part of being a dad, and he would embrace that. For now? A few moments of quiet and the fresh air to allow him to relax.
Avery smiled as he pulled into the gas station. Heading inside, he would get some goodies. Twix bar. Snickers bar. Chocolate covered pretzels. He even got a Hershey milk chocolate bar to check all of the boxes of candy and chocolate variety. Heading into the chip aisle, he grabbed himself some Jalapeno Ranch Ruffles. He made his way to the cooler, and grabbed a bottle of Vanilla Coke for himself. A bottle of chocolate milk for her. The gas station had small aisles with a few grocery items. He grabbed a couple of jars of pickles; dill spears. They also had a giant jar at the counter, and he made sure to get two huge pickles that would offer a crunch like no other. Paying for everything and lugging it out to his truck, something caught his eye.
“Zoe..”
He mumbled under his breath.
“It can’t be…”
He loaded the bags into the passenger seat as he saw a raven haired girl get into a two-door sports car. He sees her slip her sunglasses over her eyes; the sort of glasses that took up half of her face. She started the car up as she took off into traffic nearing running another car off of the road.
“I am seeing things…”
Avery shakes it off. Zoe had died. He had the funeral service for her. He saw her go into the ground. He had to be seeing things. He shook it off as he had to get back to Serenity. This was just a weird, one-time thing… right?
