Women’s Health Center Exam Room
Oceanside, CA
Wednesday, March 7, 2018
Danielle Basch is sitting on the end of the exam table, her feet dangling as she holds her hands in her lap, draped from the waist down with a thin, white sheet. Standing nearby with a somewhat nervous look on his face is her husband Donovan, who has his gaze fixed on his wife. Danielle lets out a sigh as she stares at the closed exam room door.
Danielle: I wonder what’s taking so long....
Donovan: You think maybe they’ll come back with word that you’re...
Her eyes dart quickly toward Donovan, wide open as if silently signaling “don’t you DARE finish that sentence!”
Danielle: I don’t even want to HEAR that word; not until after the doctor comes back with the test results.
Donovan takes a deep breath and slowly nods his head. He walks over, taking her hands in his.
Donovan: Fair enough, dearest. But whatever the results may be, we’ll get through it. If it’s negative, though, how do you want to proceed?
They hadn’t felt the need to have this conversation since the first time they had been intimate. At the time, it was simply common sense. Now, they were only a few seconds away from finding out if their lives were about to change drastically, or if they would have to be even more careful than before.
Danielle: We may have to take some extra precautions.
Before Donovan could respond, the door opens, and the doctor comes into the room, a smile plastered on her face as she grips a wooden clipboard. She shuts the door behind her, then stands near the exam table, looking back and forth between husband and wife.
Doctor: Alright... I’m sure that took a bit longer than you were hoping for....[/color]
A nervous Danielle manages a sheepish smile before replying, her voice carrying a hint of a chuckle.
Danielle: You have no idea, Dr. Adamson...
Donovan: So, do you have any news for us?
Donovan gives the doctor an expectant look. The doctor looks over her clipboard, then back at the couple, taking a deep breath.
Dr. Adamson: Well, I’m happy to report that after going over all of your test results, everything is just fine. In fact, out of all the patients I’ve seen today, you are in the best physical shape, Mrs. Basch.
Danielle lets out a sigh, half of relief, and half of disappointment. She’s glad to hear she’s healthy, but one other question remains unanswered.
Dr. Adamson: This brings me to the main concern you were having. I’m afraid the pregnancy tests have all come back negative...
Husband and wife look at each other, this time with both of them looking as if massive weights had been lifted from their shoulders. They turn back to the doctor, unable to hide the smiles on their faces.
Dr. Adamson: And here I thought I was about to be the bearer of bad news….
Danielle: Well, I mean…
Donovan: My wife and I would have been happy regardless of the results, to be honest.
Danielle: It’s just that from a career standpoint, the timing isn’t exactly ideal.
Dr. Adamson: Indeed. On the bright side, you’re still young enough that you have plenty of time to plan your family.
Danielle: Right. For now, we’re just not quite ready yet. Someday, perhaps… just not now.
Dr. Adamson: That’s certainly a breath of fresh air, compared to some of the other couples that have come in here, wondering why they haven’t gotten pregnant after the first time.
Donovan: I don’t pretend to know a lot about female anatomy, but even I know that’s not exactly how it works!
Dr. Adamson: Right. Well, since everyone seems to be happy with the outcome, I guess I’ll step out and let you get changed. I’d like to schedule you for a follow-up appointment in about a week, just to be absolutely certain. It may not even be necessary, and if that’s the case, you can always cancel.
Danielle: Sounds like a plan. And thank you, Doctor.
Dr. Adamson: All a part of the job. You two take care, and I’ll see you maybe in a week.
With that, the doctor leaves the room, leaving Danielle and Donovan to themselves. Danielle leans her head against her husband’s chest, a look of relief on her face as he wraps his arms around her.
Donovan chuckles slightly, prompting Danielle to look at him with a puzzled expression on her face.
Danielle: What’s so funny?
Donovan: Oh, nothing. I was just picturing the look on my father’s face if you HAD been pregnant. He’s made no bones about wanting to become a grandfather.
Danielle: Well, he’s just going to have to wait. When it’s time, it’ll happen. But for now, let’s just focus on what we need to do.
She sighs, then slaps her hands on the sides of the exam table.
Danielle: Like getting the hell out of here!
Husband and wife share a laugh as Donovan steps back to allow her to get off the exam table.
