“The Gift”
Date: March 7, 2018
Former WCG West Coast Champion Julianna DiMaria is at her home for the moment just trying to work out whatever issues are going on in her head. She’s been largely despondent ever since losing the West Coast title and she’s been a lot less social outside of Twitter than what she’s known for. Times are definitely tough for the young, 23-year-old San Diego native as she doesn’t seem to know exactly what she wants in her young life. She sits on the couch without focusing on too much of anything but much to her annoyance, she isn’t going to be alone much longer as her roommates, Christy and Ally, come into the picture. Ally looks like she’s holding something behind her back as she and Christy try to get through to her.
Ally: So… do you want to talk to us yet?
Julianna sighs and shakes her head.
Christy: It’s been a month since you lost the West Coast Championship. Don’t you think it’s past time to get over it?
Julianna’s eyes narrow in anger, but she still isn’t saying anything.
Ally: She really doesn’t want to talk.
Christy: I guess there’s only one thing left to do.
Ally: Yep…
Ally pulls the mystery gift that Julianna got for Christmas in front of her, causing Julianna to widen her eyes in shock.
Christy: So… gonna talk?
Julianna claws her nails into the couch.
Ally: I wonder what’s inside…
Julianna: DON’T TOUCH THAT!
Christy: NOW we’re talking! But… why wouldn’t we? I mean, it’s not like you even want to open it.
Ally: I know! Why don’t you just let us have it since you hate it so much?
Julianna: I may have some use for it… at some point. I mean… I’m going to need it for my forsaken career, I know that much.
Ally: “Forsaken”...
Christy: You really need to let this go, Julianna…
Julianna: I’LL NEVER LET IT GO!!!! Now give me that fucking thing…
Julianna stands up to tries to take it from Ally, but Ally tosses it to Christy.
Julianna: HEY!!!
Julianna goes to get it from Christy, but she tosses it back to Ally and at this point, the whole situation becomes a game of keep away as Christy and Ally keep tossing the gift back and forth between each other. However, at one point, Julianna is able to undercut a toss and intercept it.
Julianna: GOT IT!!!! HANDS OFF!!!!
Christy: Jeez, Julianna!
Ally: You seem to really be protective of a Christmas gift that you hate so much without even opening it.
Julianna: My parents gave it to ME, not to either of you!
Christy: But you clearly don’t want it…
Julianna: Because it’s something stupid, that’s why. It’s some fucking useless thing meant to help my wrestling career that they fucking forced on me to begin with. They NEVER cared about me and I doubt they are truly sorry for all of the shit that they put me through while I was growing up! You know, if my parents were here right now, I would tear apart this fucking thing into a million pieces and shove it up BOTH of their asses! I HATE THEM! I hate that they forced me into this. Fuck… I even HATE WRESTLING! Why am I even DOING THIS? I might as well just forfeit to Melina and get the fuck out! FUCK THIS! FUCK WRESTLING! If only they were here so I could tell them how much I hate this business!
Right on cue, the doorbell rings. Christy and Ally look at each other and have a smirk on their respective faces as they go to open the door.
Julianna: You guys invited company?
Christy: Not just ANY company…
Christy opens the door and Julianna is caught in surprise, and then anger, when both of her parents walk in.
Ally: So, what is it that you wanted to tell your parents?
Julianna: WHY???
Mr. DiMaria: I see you STILL haven’t opened the gift.
Christy: Didn’t you say something about how you wanted to tear it to a million pieces in front of their faces?
Julianna: CHRISTY!
Mrs. DiMaria: Okay, this is just getting ridiculous. We gave you that gift more than two months ago and you haven’t opened it?
Mr. DiMaria: I gotta say… we’ve been VERY disappointed in you over the last month…
Julianna: I don’t need this. Why should I open this? It’s something stupid!
Mrs. DiMaria: How do you know when you haven’t even opened it?
Julianna: Because I KNOW you both! All you’ve ever done from when I was a little girl was force professional wrestling on me. It’s to the point where… oh you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to tell you both this… I HATE PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING.
Both of her parents are the ones widening their eyes in shock now.
Julianna: I HATE how you forced a career on me that I never knew for sure I ever wanted. All I ever wanted to do was grow up and be a normal child, but NO! I don’t do this because I want to do this, I do this because you both EXPECTED ME to do this… and because I happen to be really good at it… or I WAS really good at it…
Christy: You still are, Julianna. Losing a title doesn’t change that.
Julianna: Shut up!
Julianna’s disrespect of Christy causes her parents to roll their eyes.
Julianna: ...but yeah… there you go! I’m tired of this shit! I’m tired of doing something that you two forced on me. You’ve been forcing it on me since before I was mentally mature enough to have my own dreams and aspirations. You have never proven ONE TIME that you actually love me and this fucking gift…
Julianna pauses as tears begin to well up in her eyes.
Julianna: This worthless piece of shit is just going to further pour salt into the sinkhole my inner childhood wounds have become! What is it? A new training kit? New weights? A fucking protein shake? A stupid DVD about the European wrestling scene? Give me one reason why I should even BOTHER opening this.
Mrs. DiMaria: Because we love you…
Julianna: NO YOU DON’T! NO YOU FUCKING DON’T!!!!
Mr. DiMaria: Jules… come on…
Julianna: You’ve NEVER loved me! All you ever saw me as from the moment I was born was something to vicariously live through to realize the dream YOU BOTH FAILED AT! YOU USED ME! I’m going to wrestle this match against Melina and probably lose so she can brag about it on Twitter and make fun of me just like she has for MONTHS over how she’s my kryptonite or whatever… and then I’m going to get the fuck out of California and start a new life somewhere, take some time to find something I actually want to do with my life and fuck, even change my name… and NONE OF YOU WILL EVER SEE ME AGAIN!
I’m DONE!
Ever since I lost that West Coast title, my world has come crashing down! So… get the fuck out of my house… get the fuck out of my LIFE… and take your stupid Christmas gift back!!!
Julianna loses it as she throws the gift right at her mother’s face. Fortunately for everyone involved, her mother catches the gift right before it hits her in the face.
Mr. DiMaria: It’s a shame it had to come to this.
Julianna: Blame yourselves… fucking ASSHOLES! Get away from me!!!!!
Mrs. DiMaria: If this is what you really want…
Mr. DiMaria: Have at it. Do what you have to do. If you want nothing to do with us, if you want to start a new life and new career after this last match… fine!
Christy & Ally: WHAT?
Julianna doesn’t see that her mother turned toward her two roommates and gave them a wink.
Mrs. DiMaria: We’ll let you have what you want… but, we’re not leaving yet.
Julianna: UGH!!! LEAVE!!!! PLEASE!
Mr. DiMaria: We will… you just need to do one last thing before we’re out of your lives forever.
Julianna: FINE… WHAT?
Mrs. DiMaria: Open the gift we got you!
Julianna sighs and rolls her eyes as her mother walks up to her and hands her the gift again.
Julianna: OKAY…
Julianna sighs as she places the gift on the table.
Julianna: This is your last chance to prove me wrong!
Julianna reaches into the large, white paper bag and pulls out the gift which is a small box that is wrapped cleanly, but with all of the hot potato that’s happened, there are some minor nicks and tears.
Julianna: I REALLY look forward to the stupid training set I’m about to open… being sarcastic by the way…
Julianna rolls her eyes as she tears the wrapping paper. She doesn’t waste time removing it from the gift…
Julianna: ...what…
Julianna looks at the gift completely wide-eyed and shocked….
Julianna: ...but...I….
It’s not a weight set. It’s not a protein shake. It’s not a DVD about wrestling. In fact, contrary to Julianna’s skepticism, the gift isn’t even anything wrestling related at all!
Christy: What a fitting gift…
Julianna is glancing, with widened eyes glistened with tears of joy, at a Bratz doll!
Ally: ...you guys got her a Bratz doll???
Julianna: I…. I’ve wanted this for SO LONG!!!! You two don’t even realize how BAD I wanted it when I was a little girl! I put it on my Christmas list year after year after year and I never got it… until now!!!!
Christy: Well… you ARE a brat so…
Julianna: HEY… fuck off!
Julianna grasps it and clutches it almost as if it was the WCG West Coast Championship that meant so much to her.
Julianna: I’ve never felt so HAPPY in my entire life!!!!!
Julianna turns toward her two parents.
Julianna: You guys really DO love me!!!!
She pauses as she continues to cry with joy.
Julianna: I’m… I’m SO sorry!!!
Mr. DiMaria: No worries… we know deep down that the way you’ve been acting hasn’t really been you… it all came from a place of hatred within your heart…
Mrs. DiMaria: ...that we put there!
Julianna: I love you both so much!!!
Julianna walks up to her father and the two exchange a hug.
Julianna: I didn’t mean what I said about wanting you two out of my life…
Mr. DiMaria: We know you didn’t…
Julianna breaks from her father to hug her mother who is shedding the same tears of joy.
Mrs. DiMaria: Thank goodness this is over and as a family, we can all start to heal after all this time.
Julianna: Suddenly, I don’t feel like losing the West Coast title is the end of the world anymore. I have something I wanted for so long and that I know won’t ever be taken from me
Julianna walks back toward the Bratz doll and clutches it close to her chest. She looks toward Christy and Ally with an angry glare.
Julianna: If either of you touch this… you DIE!!!
Christy and Ally say nothing and calmly back away.
Mr. DiMaria: Just letting you know… if you want to do something else with your life… go ahead.
Mrs. DiMaria: Don’t forget you have one last match… if you really DO want to do something else…
Julianna: Yeah…
Julianna takes a deep breath as she puts the Bratz doll back on the table.
Julianna: I’m going to fight this match against Melina… and I’m going to give wrestling a chance. I’m going to try and have fun in there and not take this so seriously. This match… this is the one test that will determine whether or not I want to do this for the rest of my life.
Mrs. DiMaria: Either way, we support you and we want the best for you.
Julianna: Thank you… you have no idea how much it means to me to finally be able to believe that.
Julianna looks back at the Bratz doll soaking it all in. She doesn’t know how to grasp it just yet, but deep down, a whole new perspective on things is starting to flood her mind. She doesn’t know what to do with it quite yet… but going into her promotion match against Melina Garrison on Hype… the one thing she knows for sure is that the validation from her parents that she long sought finally being a reality has changed her life… and perhaps even her wrestling career… for the better.
