“We got the cameras rolling yet? Excellent!”
This was a common location for Adrien Cochrane to shoot some of his match hype videos. The shadow of the Dropkick King is cast upon the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. With the weather being relatively calm, the lake gently waves into the shore a few feet from where the New Orleans native stands.
“A lot can be said about a person based on their actions. Their words can reveal a lot about how they think and what they believe, but their actions speak volumes about the kind of person they are and the content of their character. But there is another thing I always look to when I’m trying to figure out what kind of person someone is, and that is how they treat people who answer to them.”
Cochrane takes a few steps forward, closer to the camera.
“I look at how someone treats allies of theirs that look up to them. I look at how someone who fights for someone else, how appreciated is their fight. That brings us to the dilemma of facing Coda and Kayla Richards. There is a member of this match who has a severe bloodlust for me and my partner in this match-up. This person isn’t fighting to prove anything but fighting because her heart is filled with hatred and anger. She wants to destroy and maim. And the funny thing, to me anyway, is that there is one person in this match who is considered to be a monster and the person I described is not that person.
“Coda speaks about how well Kayla Richards and Matthew Shields treats her. And I’m happy she is treated that way. But there is something I’ve noticed because, perhaps, I’m the only person who has looked hard enough at this. It’s always been on their terms. Coda has done things she didn’t want to do because that was what she was told to do to further the plans of the monarchy. She didn’t want to attack Honey after our match. Coda’s actions tell me that she had no qualms with Honey. The words she spoke show no hatred or anger towards Honey. But when Kayla Richards told her to attack one of the few people she had ever done anything socially with, Coda didn’t hesitate. Richards and Shields mean that much to her. To Coda, their wars are her wars.
“Coda is described as a monster. I respectfully think of her as something more than that. A monster is defined as four key elements by the dictionary: imaginary, large, ugly, frightening. She’s smaller than most the roster, she’s not ugly, and she is a corporeal entity that fights in our very ring. Frightening, I guess your mileage may vary on that front. The term monster also gives the connotation that she is a mindless drone with only thoughts of destruction. Coda has free will. I’ve seen situations where she won’t cross a line she doesn’t want to cross, even if ordered by Richards and Shields. Part of me wishes that would have been the case in the aftermath of Honey getting her tag team championship shot, but let us not worry about events of the past we cannot control.
“What I want to see to prove that Coda is right about Kayla Richards and Matthew Shields is for them to do something when it’s Coda’s war and not their own. Coda has acted on behalf of the monarchy when it benefitted them and her none. I want to see Kayla Richards do something that helps Coda and does literally nothing for her. I want to see if Matt Shields is willing to put himself in harm's way for Coda when it does nothing for him.
“Me? I just did that. I got nothing out of getting Honey that championship opportunity. I didn’t know I would end up in the ring with Kayla Richards and Coda when I offered to substitute for Alechs. Honey’s war became mine. Alechs’s war became mine. It became MY priority to make sure the Young Cubs have a chance to become the next tag team champions in our company. I didn’t do it for me, I did it for them. All I can hope for is that they take advantage of the position they are in and complete the process.
“Can you do that for Coda, Kayla? If a hypothetical and improbable situation came down to sacrificing your opportunity to win that Heavyweight Championship to help Coda keep her Young Lions Championship? Would Shields have done the same if he still carried his title? Let’s be frank, Coda would give up her championship for you two to obtain one. Does this relationship with Coda go both ways?
“And like I said before, you can tell what a person thinks by what they say. But if you want to know what a person’s true character is: watch what they do. I have absolutely no interest in what Kayla or Matthew say back to me on this issue. I can probably tell you what they will say, actually. The nice version of what Kayla Richards is going to say to me is how I’m a moron and don’t understand the whole relationship before stating about how she’s going to commit an actual murder inside of the ring. Shields won’t be that dissimilar: probably going to say in broken Old English that I am in way over my head, that my mind can’t comprehend something like the chemistry between the three, and then talk about how Kayla Richards is going to commit an actual murder inside the ring.
“In fact, the only member of this team that I would say isn’t very predictable is Coda herself. I respect her ability like no other. She is a very deserving champion and I think she will take the Young Lions Championship to a whole new level. To her, the world of black and white isn’t good versus evil, but people who can and people who can’t. She thinks my ideals are wasteful, but this is what I’m going to show you, Coda. When we step into that ring as opponents once more, I will give you a taste of just how skilled and talented I am. I will show you why I am a three-time World Heavyweight Champion. And maybe then you will realize that I’m not some pushover that is held back by what you believe to be my weakness: empathy. As much as you disagree with this sentiment, Shields and Richards are the disease, and I am the cure. If you’re standing in my way, Coda, I will not hold back.
“And one day, I hope you can think back about and at least understand my motives. I’m not asking you to desert your friends. That’s not my intention. But if they keep doing what they do, there will be consequences. And while you state you don’t agree with everything they do, your inaction is equal to what they do, in my eyes. And if you are between me and them, Coda, those consequences will find you too.”
Confusion never stops
Closing walls and ticking clocks
Gonna come back and take you home
I could not stop that you now know, singing
Come out upon my seas
Cursed missed opportunities
Am I a part of the cure?
Or am I part of the disease? Singing
You are, you are, you are
You are, you are, you are
