There is an establishing shot of a row of unused treadmills. The equipment is old and mismatched, which meant they fit in perfectly with the rest of the gym’s low rent ambiance. Enter our protagonist, Tornado Desencadenado, wearing a 'West Coast Genesis' tank top and grey shorts. He mounts one of the machines and turns it on; a slow walk at first, with an even plane; but after a few button pushes the speed and the incline both increase, forcing TD into a steep jog. Despite the exertion, and over the deep thrumming of the turning tread belt, he addresses the viewer.
“This-“
He extends his arms out and downward, spread fingers presenting the machinery he ran upon.
“-is symbolic of what’s going on with me in WCG. Three shows in and I’m still in the same place on the card. Really. Go look it up. Hype 04 has me competing in the second match of the show, just like I have the previous two months. I don’t have anyone else to blame but myself for that, since I lost both times before. And while any spot in the company is a good place to be at, given the talent level here; at this point I was hoping I’d be able to generate some forward momentum. Hasn’t happened. Right now, in West Coast Genesis, I’m just-“
He makes a rolling, hand over hand motion: the universal basketball signal for ‘traveling’.
“-running in place. I need to change that. To get what I want, who I want-“
That would be a solo match against the wrestler who defeated him in his debut, one Scotty Latimer.
“- I need to start stringing together some victories. First chance for me comes this Saturday. Hype heads to Bakersfield, California for a Fourth of July weekend show. I’m up against Keiji Sugiwara and CJ Lorson, who will be making his WCG debut. I’ve fought Keiji during April’s road show event. We traded wins, and he definitely made me earn mine. An amazing striker for his size, ‘The Last Emperor’ also has no problem going airborne if he needs to. He also has the advantage of having faced, and pinned, CJ Lorson during WCG’s June road show circuit, so there’s some in ring familiarity there. Me, I only got to watch from outside, but what I saw from CJ impressed me. His MMA training has given him a strong technical base. I doubt I’ll be able to out-wrestle him.”
TD reaches to the machine’s console and presses the button to raise the track, making his climb even steeper.
“If I want to win Saturday, I’m going to have to rely on the one advantage I didn’t have last month when I lost to Donovan Basch: my power. As the big man in the match I’ll need to use my size and strength to manhandle my opponents; keep them off balance as much as I can to get that winning pinfall that’s eluded me so far at Hype! . If I can do that, I’ll show Management I deserve more opportunities and kickstart my career in WCG.”
Looking away from the camera, the young wrestler puts on the earbuds that have been dangling around his neck. He then increases the speed of the treadmill and begins his warm up run in earnest.
