“It’s like déjà vu, all over again.”

Xaria Veronica Karloff
The Angel Returneth Vol. 3: Familiarity
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
For a moment, the world sees Xaria Karloff in a dazed and confused state of mind.
A flowery pink dress hugs every curve of her body in all the right ways. She seems completely unaware of her surroundings, not even the phone on the tripod captures her attention. There’s a far-away look in her gentle green eyes as she stares away from the camera, her hands folded on her lap.
On the other side, Rosalyn Fernandes raises an eyebrow as she stares at her mentor. She takes a moment to adjust the camera’s focus and increase the quality. When she’s done with this, she clears her throat.
“You know what they say. The show must go on.”
Hearing Rosalyn’s voice, Xaria turns to regard her and she’s finally aware of the recording. A slight blush rises to the surface of her cheeks before she quickly shakes her head.
“Oui. I’m sorry, I was just thinking…”
“Thinking? About what?”
Xaria stares intently at the camera and she shakes her head.
“It’s not something I wish to openly discuss…”
She looks to Rosalyn with a gentle smile.
“I called you here for business, so I shouldn’t be wasting your time. I know Leonardo misses you whenever you’re gone.”
The auburn red-haired girl chuckles and returns the smile.
“Leo’s a model for Calvin Klein Incorporated and Trenton Modeling Industries, so he’s very busy. Now that I’m a Yale graduate, I get to join him on his business trips and spend more time with him. But he also understands that I’m a licensed artist in the art industry. There are projects I have to work on that will take me elsewhere.”
She shakes her head a little.
“We can talk more about our personal lives later. Right now, allow me to be honest. Your career in Redemption Wrestling so far… It’s not great. WrestleForce didn’t end well for you. You were just eliminated from the 2017 All-Female Invitational by Merlot. Dear God, the Ayano Clan…”
Rosalyn rolls her eyes in clear annoyance and disgust. Xaria frowns a little and nods.
“I’m well aware of my own failures as of late. I’m not going to make any excuses. My performances have been very poor, and let’s be honest… I’m nowhere near as young as I used to be.”
Despite her predicament, she can’t help but giggle softly.
“Ten years ago, I was twenty years old. I was full of youth, energy, and high spirit. I could fly without a care in the world and I could fight my demons without fear!”
Slowly, Xaria frowns and looks away from the camera for a moment.
“Now? I’m almost thirty-one. I’m the proud mother of three beautiful children. During my career, I had to go on maternity leave for two very different pregnancies. I needed to spend time with my family before I could return to the industry I loved…”
She takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly.
“Someone reminded me that I haven’t been a world champion in ten years. When I was twenty, I was the last Legacy Wrestling Alliance Undisputed World Champion. Ever since then, I haven’t been able to attain such a top-tier prestigious title. I’ve held titles of other levels, including tag-team four different times, and I was even inducted into the LWA Hall of Fame. When it comes to being the top champion of a wrestling company… Ten years, Rosalyn. That’s a long time.”
Behind the camera feature, Rosalyn solemnly nods. Xaria shakes her head and offers the camera a sad smile.
“...When I was starting off in the wrestling industry, I wasn’t doing very well. There was a time when I wanted to quit, pack my bags, and go back to Sensei Alan’s dojo in Charlotte. Instead of doing that, I trained and worked harder than ever before. Soon I became the champion of a hardcore division when I didn’t even like to use weapons! It was the first of my golden accomplishments. I didn’t give up then and I’m not going to give up now. Every wrestler experiences highs and lows in their career. Every wrestler knows the glory of victory and the humility of defeat. Every wrestler has their good and bad days.”
The more she speaks, the stronger and clearer her determination becomes. Even when she’s vulnerable, the strength of her heart always perseveres. She uncrosses her legs, brushes at her denim blue capris jeans, and she smiles.
“I’ve accomplished great things in this industry, but there is still so much I need to do. I may not be as young and carefree as I once was, but I’m far more experienced and intelligent now. I’ve defeated Mademoiselle Alicia Hixx before in tag-team competition. This time, it’s just the two of us, and I know I can defeat her again. Alicia, I understand you’ve gone through some painful times with Jack Tillman and Mark Storm. Believe me, I’m not happy about those two. Their disrespectful actions will not go unpunished. But this match isn’t about them, is it? It’s about us. It’s about the Rainbow Angel spreading her wings and flying towards victory. This isn’t a personal battle. This is simply a professional match I must win.”
Rosalyn looks on with a huge grin on her face. This is the Xaria she knows. No matter the obstacles and adversaries, she is always fighting.
“I think everyone on the Redemption roster should be on notice. Coda, Jack Tillman, Mark Storm, Kayla Richards, Matthew Shields, Rebel Ink, Jeremy Starling, Blair Kivistö, Caroline O’Hara Burchill, Yujiro Fujiwara… Everyone. You’re a legend in this industry and I know you’re going to show them exactly why you are THE Rainbow Angel!”
As Rosalyn zooms out, Xaria rises to her feet and steps around to walk behind what she’s been sitting on this entire time.
The glitter-painted, sticker-covered steel chair.
